Failure of enough North Carolina women to prepare themselves for work essential to the victory effort is causing a serious re duction in enrollment in training courses financed by the Federal government, Director Edward W. Ruggles of the N. C. State College Extension" Division declared today. Citing the War Manpower Com mission's edict that the coming year will see millions of additional women required in war work, Director Rug gles said too few North Carolinians are taking advantage of the free courses which will qualify them for work in war industries and essential government activities. "Women must prepare themselves for the fast-approaching period when they will be called on in increasing numbers to enter the war production program," Ruggles declared. "It has got to be done. Women must take ,a larger role in the battle on the home front. By preparing themselves now, they will be ready to perform effi ciently the duties of the men they release from the production line and other war work for military service." ' Ruggles said vacancies exist in every one of the short courses of fered at State College for men and women desiring to train themselves for work vital to the victory program. The situation has arisen despite con tinued appeals for more non-college students, particularly women, to en roll and become prepared for lucra tive Jobs offered by war industries and other agencies literally begging for more technically trained workers. Some of the jobs open to women pay as high as $2,000 annually to start. Ruggles had . a request today for five women to take drafting jobs paying $185 to $150 . monthly to be gin. He was unable to fill the request because the hundreds of women who have completed the short courses at State College already are holding down essential jobs. s ; Nearly a score of short courses have been scheduled to start in a new series next -month, Ruggles said,, urging women to write to his office for a new bulletin describing the courses, which last from 10 to 20 weeks. . - ' ;'!; . All expenses of the training except students' subsistence and textbooks are paid by the Federal government through the U. S. Office of Education. In' most courses, high" school gradua tion is the only educational require ment. Courses in the new series will in clude aerial bombardment protection, aircraft inspection, architectural and marine drafting, chemical testing and inspection, engineering drawing, en gineering1 fundamentals, fabric in spection and testing, fundamentals of machinery, industrial safety engineer ing, materials testing and inspection, production supervision, war produc tion engineering and contracting, radio communication and surveying. In addition, courses are available in aircraft sheetmetal work, welding and machine shop practices. - Hundreds of men and women have taken the training since the courses first started at State College two years ago. The record for job place ments has been "practically perfect," Ruggles has reported. Usually, classes were filled quickly. In recent months, however, enrollment has declined as the availability of male students de creasedThe slack has not been taken up by women, despite the frantic ap peals of war industries and agencies for technically trained women. For this reason, Director Ruggles was particularly urgent today in in viting women to enroll in the new series. He has written a special ap peal to women's clubs throughout the State to cooperate in securing stu dents. Selma Boy Promoted To Army Sergeant Ralph J.
