to Fort Myers, Fla., after a 15-day
furlough with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. George Hodge.
Rev. Howard F. Newman of Rich
mond, Va., preached at the Presbyte
rian church on Sunday.
Mr. Johnnie Wiggs is a patient at
the Veterans Hospital in Fayette-
viiie.
Miss Elizabeth Hill is an operative
patient at a Wilson hospital. Friends
wish for her a speedy recovery.
Bill Watson, who is a student at
Presbyterian Junior College, Maxton,
spent the week end at home with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Watson.
Miss Mary Ricks spent last week
with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hicks near

Joint Hostesses
To Newly Weds
On Thursday evening, the home of
Mr. and Mrs . P. D. Grady was the
scene of a lovely fall party, when
Mrs. P. D. Grady, Sr., Mrs. Elbert El
dridge and Mrs. P. D. Grady, Jr., en
tertained at bridge, honoring Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Talton, who were re
cently married.
The first floor of the spacious home
'Was thrown en suite for the occasion.
Arrangement of roses and fall flow
ers lent charm and color to the set
ting for the party.
After four progressions of bridge,
the hostess served a delicious plate
of ice cream, cake and coffee.
The guests of honor, Mr. and Mrs.
Talton, were presented with a pair
of lovely crystal vases. Miss Nathalie
Yelton of Raleigh and Glendale, was
remembered with a gift.
High score prizes were awarded to
Mrs. R. S. Atkinson and E. V. Neigh
bors. While the low went to J. Burke
Long, and the travelers prize to Mr.
and Mrs. L. C Wilkinson, Jr.

Our Soldier Boys
There will be a special service at
the Kenly Missionary Baptist church
on Sunday, October 10, for the men
of this community who are in the
armed services. The Rev. Tom Free
man, pastor of the church, will deliv
er the sermon. Public is cordially in
vited to attend this special service.
These boys are fighting for us, so
let's keep the home fires buring for
them by attending church services.

Met Monday
Circles Nos. 1 and 2 of the Wom
an's Auxiliary of the Presbyterian
church met Monday night at the home
of Mrs. P. D. Grady. Jr., with Mrs.
Maybelle Draughon leading the pro
gram on the subject, "The Strategy
of Home Missions." Mrs. " Rudolph
Kirby presided over the business ses
sion.'. " The hostess served an iced drink
with cookies.

Mr. and Mrs. Worley Wall enter
tained about 60 guests Sunday at
their home near town in honor of
their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Nor
wood Wall, of Norfolk, Va.
A table outdoors was heavily laden
with ' barbecue and all accessories,
consisting of chicken, cakes, and pies
sandwiches, ham, tea, etc., which was
greatly enjoyed by all .

Funeral Held For
Sgt. Clyde E. Owen
Sgt. Clyde E. Owen, Jr., 22, former
ly of Pittsburgh, Pa., died in the
Barnes General Hospital in Van
couver, Washington, Monday, Sept.
27, after an illness of three months.
He was the son of the late Mr. and

He married Miss Ruth Lane of Micro,
in 1941, and she had resided here
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Lane, while her husband was in the
service of his country.
Funeral services were held Sunday
afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Micro
Free Will Baptist Church by Chaplain
Mantle of Seymour Johnson Field,
Goldsboro, assisted by the Rev. J. Al
phonso Evans of Middlesex.
Military rites were held and inter
ment was in Sunset Memorial Park
at Smithfield. ' ;
Surviving are his wife; three
brothers, Richard Owen of Oberlin,
Ohio, Sgt. Warren G. Owen of Rich
mond, Va, and Pvt Hugh Wayne
Owen of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sisters,
Mrs. Mary Young of Loraine, Ohio,
and Mrs. Dorothy McKerahan of
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Those from a distance to attend the
funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Owen and son of Oberlin. Ohio; Sgt.
Warren Owen of Richmond, Va., and
Mrs. Dorothy McKerahan of Pitts
burgh, Pa.

evening at the home of Mrs. C. W.
