THE JOHNSTONIAN - SUN, SELMA, N. C. THURSDAY, NOV. 29, 194 ). PAGE THREE Conservation Farming News, By C. W. WARRICK Mr. G. L. Winchester, District Con servationist of the Neuae River Soil Conservation District spent November 20, and November 21 with the John ston County Work Unit personnel in helping to train five Johnston County men to aid the farmers who have made plans, for a conservation pro gram on their farms. In 1940 the farmers of Johnston voted to join the Neuse River District the U. S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service assisting in technical aid. Since 1940, 500 conser vation farm plans have been planned with the farmers of the county. To carry out the plans and practices on .the farms more time and supervision was demanded than the permanent personnel could give to the individual farmer. Some of these practices to be established on the farms fire terrac ing, tile drainage, establishment of pastures, establishment of sericea Ies pedeza or kudzu on the steepest most eroded areas, seeding of meadows' or water-ways, wildlife border areas, planting and thinning of trees and the .rotation of crops. When the Work Unit was establish ed in the county a trained -conservationist was placed in charge of the work, and soon an assistant conser vationist was stationed in the county until so maity of the qualified men were called into military service. For some time a conservation aide and a part time aide have been working in the county. Now, five other part-time men have been added to help save Johnston's most valuable asset, the soil. The men who are to help in estfcb lishing more conservation practices on the Johnston County farms are practical farmers and have either worked with the service or have established some of these practices on their own farms. Therefore, the Dis trict feels that these part-time men can render a great service to the farmers in their section of the County by contacting and assisting the farm ers in getting the practices done on their farms. Then too, these men will be easily available to be called on hy the permanent personnel to assist them in doing a technical job. The following are the aides that are to work in their respective com munities, Cary F. Boyette, Corinth Holder; William Aaron Creech, Car eer's Chapel; Jasper L. Jones, Raine3 Cross Roads; Elmond V. Lee, New Hope; and W. Arthur Martin, Eleva tion. ' . It is hoped that the farmers of the county will feel free to call on these men and that they will render you farmers a valuable service.
