War Declared Against RD , Duplin County Tuberculosis Association America's numiber one disabler and timewaster, and its fourth largest cause of death, is on the defensive at last. For the first time in history, a broad-scale campaign is now be ing waged to alert the public t the meaning of RD - Respiratory Disease. RD, a group of ailments ranging from the common cold to such grave disorders as tubercu lpsis and emphysema, not only puts more Americans out of action for more days each year than any other class of disease, but ac counts for nearly one out of every 10 deaths in the United States. The National Tuberculosis As sociation, which inaugurated the drive in collaboration with more than two thousand local affiliates throughout the nation, points out that all forms of RD - illnesses tus - have a relationship to tubercu losis. Chronice respiratory diseases include not only TB and emphy sema, but such serious ailments as pleurisy, chronic bronchitis, asth ma, lung cancer, and certain fun gus infections of the lungs. In addition, acute respiratory diseases such as influenza and pneumonia, while less dangerous in themselves than in former times, can break down resistance and help inactive tuberculosis germs cause active disease. Chronic cough, and shortness of breath that occurs for no evident reason, are the commonest warn ifg signs of RD. And to alert u!1 people to the significance ot the v. warnings, the motto employed by your tuberculosis association u ij educdiioi.ai oiive is: "it you have chronic cough or shortness of breath, you may have a Res piratory Disease. Don't take chan ces. See your doctor". The inten sive drive, lasting from Muv 1 .. through June 15, will b > followed f| oy a suat nned year-round edura-/a t'unal campaign on Rl> by Chris-ja mas Seal Associations her* in ether communities. tfl rOK TH* FIN 1ST IN JOS FMN.
