MURPHY, Under Secretary of Agriculture, Wallace native, will attend the Diamond Jubilee Celebration April 10th, along with Under Secretary of Commerce Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. and other distinguished guests. Charles S. Murphy, Under Se cretary of Agriculture since 1981 will accompany Under Se cretary of Commerce Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr.. oil his trip to Wallace on Friday, April 10th. Murphy, son of the late W.F. and Kate Westbrook Mur phy was born August 20. 1909 in Wallace where he attended public schools. As Under Secretary of Agri culture. Murphy is the number two man in die administration of the Department and serves as Acting secretary in the ab sence of the Secretary of Ag riculture. He is the Chairman of the Budget Committee of the Department of Agriculture, and President of the Commodity Credit Corporation. He has spe cial responsibility for supervi sing the commodity programs of the Department. This in cludes support prices and acre age allotments for tobacco, cot ton feed grains, peanuts rice, wheat ana other commodities. His responsibilities also in clude policies relating to mana gement and disposition of gov ernment stocks of agricultural commodities, the purchase and distribution of commodities for the school lunch program, as well as the direct distribution program for providing foods to needy persons. Both Under Secretary Mur phy and Under Secretary Roo sevelt were appointed to their present positions by the late President Kenned/ and serve as their Secretaries' alter nates in attending Cabinet meet ings. Each has attended meet ings of President Johnson's Ca binet In recent weeks. Murphy received an A.B. De gree from the Duke University In 1931 and a LL.B. In 1934; having worked his way through school as a laborer and clerk in the Post Office. He was ad mitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1934. In 1934, he became a law assistant in the office of the U.S. Senate Legislative Coun sel. serving in this post for two years. For the next 11 years he was Assistant Legis lative Counsel to the Senate. His duties were to help the Senators and senatorial com mittees draft bills and com mittee reports and to advise them on legal matters. As a specialist in agricultural leg islation. he helped draft tne Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938, prepared committee re ports on agriculture and assis ted in the drafting of other im portant farm bills, in 1947, he became Administrative As sistant to President Truman. In 1950, he was advanced to the position of Special Coun sel to the President, where he acted as the principal staff assistant on legislation?in cluding farm legislation. Charles Murphy married Kate Chestney Granam of Dur ham in 1931. They have three children. One daughter. Court en ay, is married to Whitney Slater and lives in Arlington Va. Westbrook, their son Is a law student at Yale University. Another daughter, Betty 14. lives at home and an ends Wood ?row Wilson High School in Washington. His parents and grandparents Westbrook were longtime resi dents of Wallace and his par ticipation in the Diamond Jubi lee will afford his many boy hood friends the opportunity to renew acquaintance. Pope, called the meeting to order. After the minutes were read and approved, several items of business were discussed. Marina Blackmore gave the devotion entitled "The Upward Way." Ruth Lavergne and Re becca Oakley presented the program which was "The Life of William Wordsworth." Dianna Outlaw led the group in the game "Familiar Num bers.' Bette Walston was high scorer in this contest. After the meeting was ad journed, refreshments - - con sisting of punch, potato chips, cookies, and assorted sand wiches - were served to the eighteen members and the ad visor, Mrs. C. H. Pope.
