The Rockets fought back to cut the margin to 10-14 in the third quarter, but East Duplin tallied In the same period to put the game out of reach of the Rockets The Panthers, like their . ? . . :w:. . Roper Hall - ED name sake up at Mount Olive, are really fired up for the up coming game at James Kenan this week. As an East Duplin fan put it this week, "we will take James Kenan by the same score as the Mt. Olive Panthers did!' East Duplin, the darkhorse in the conference this year, have really surprised the experts with a winning season. They could very easily become the first Panthers team ever to defeat James Kcfcan. Bostic squad .with only Htle experience coming into this season has really played the iron-man sys tem this season with Utle depth. NORTH DUPUN EDGK8 RICHLAND8, 1M The North Duplin Rebels moved closer to the top four in the East Central this past Friday downing winless Rich lands, 134 in a conference clash. The biggest cheer of the con test came when back Jerry Crooms went eight yards for a Wildcat touchdown. It was the "TD" of the year for the Wild cats had not scored up until this game. The Rebels standout, fullback Donald Brogden scored North Duplin's two touchdowns and took over as the leading scorer in the conference. The Mount Olive Panthers shutout the hapless Jamse Ken an Tigers 20-0 this past Fri day night in an important East Central 2-A clash. It was the second conference loss for the eleven from Tiger town. The Mt. Olive Panthers, one of the weaker teams in the confer ence, gained a second place tie with what should be a much stronger Tiger team. They both have 4-2 ECC record. The Panthers failed to cross midfleld in the first half and only netted 29 yards from scrimmage. But late in the first period a short punt gave Mt. Olive the ball on James Ken an's 42 yard line. Mt. Olive marched to the 29 at the end of the first period. On the first play in the second period quarter Butch Herring hit end Harold Sutton on a 30 yard touchdown pass. Herring, the Panthers one-man-show, ad ded the point. The Tigers had two sustain ed drives in the first half but could not cash in on them. One of the drives covered 52 yards down to Ml. James Kenan moved from thler own 18 to the Panthers five yard line but once again they failed to score. The 67 yard drive was climaxed by two long passes from quarter ? Vance Alphin - JK back Paul Britt to end Vance Alphin. The determination to win waa the Tigers big point in not scoring on each drive . . . no individual but as a team. In fact if the Tigers had just part of the determination they had in the Burgaw game and the last four minutes in the Beaufort game .. . they would be undefeated in the conferen ce and would be die champs once again. Late in the final stanza Mt. OUve moved 7S-yards for the onesided shotout, climaxed by Herring passing to Sutton for the third score. The pass for the TD covered IS yards. The most exciting thing at the Mount Olive-James Kenan football game, from the Tigers Sports Highlights Those top three ruling pow ers are still ruling again this week, but there's been a bit of a change in management. Ohio State has been deposed, and Notre Dame is the new ViimKoe' Onn Raw An/I nn nan. iiuiuwvi v.?v *?//. ????>? r?r er, the three are favorites a gain. Notre Dame will pin back the ears of the Pitt Panthers by 23 points, while the Buck eyes, in 3rd this week, will slip the needle to Penn State by 13 points. Alabama, still the runner-up team in the nation, draws the real toughie - lUh-ranked Lou isiane State. This game could very well decide the champion ship of the Southeast Confer ence. So, with tougue in check and hand on gun: Alabama by nine points. Obce-beaten Florida stayed on the 4th rung of the nation al ladder ahead of undefeated powers Nebraska and Arkan sas. Georgia, a new member of the Elite Corps - No. 16, is the under-puppy to the Gators by nine. And this next one may deter mine the championship of the Big Eight Conference. 5th-rank ed Nebraska meets un-ranked Kansas at Lawrence, Kansas. Nebraska will remain undefeat ed with a two touchdown win. and take over sole possession of the top sDot in the league. Looking at No. 6 and No. 8 in the Top 20, there could be a small shake-up in both con ference and national ratings af ter Arkansas and Texas finish their games Saturday. Arkan sas is a slim 9-point favorite over a tough Rice Owl, while Texas should bust Baylor by U points. Michigan is 7th and Illinois dropped to 14th, but it takes nothing away from this battle for position in the Big Ten standings. Our guess is that the Illini will lose its third con ference game of the season . . Michigan by ten points. The old crystal ball picked 126 winners last week and got stuck with 41 sour ones - there were 3 ties - for an average of .785. Besides singing the many hit tunes (including The Rain in Spain, On the Street Where You Live and Wouldn't It Be Loverly), Nat adds his own impersonation of Professor Henry Higgins and Alfred Doolittle to I'm an Ordinary Man, With a Little Bit of Luck and Get Me to the Church on Time ... In the album, one of the songs changes character completely ? Show Me, which in this version is trans formed into a romantic ballad. In Capitol's How Glad I am, Nancy Wilson combines her lat est hit single (How Glad I Am) with several other current songs, (People, The Boy from Ipanema and Quiet Nights) in an album of past, present and future hits. . . .
