State University s A good many requests have j been received for information , about fruit trees which require less space than standard sorts. Fortunately, we do have a rather good collection of varie ties grafted on dwarfing root stocks which are very desirable for planting around the home where space Is a problem. First the apples: Varieties are available on Mailing No. 9 rootstock. This is the most dwarfing type, the trees reaching a helgnt erf from 6 to 10 feet at maturity. They bear early, sometimes at the end of the second growing sea son, if well attended.. They should be planted in good soil and staked for support un til they are well established in the soil. They may also be supported by a wire trellis, a wall or lattice support - Es palier training. These varieties are satis factory: Yellow Transparent, Golden Delicious and Richard Delicious (or Wlnesap or Stay man Wlnesap). It Is Important to remember that I am giving fruitful com binations and varieties which I know are available on Mail ing 9 rootstock. Both Wlnesap and Stayman are self- and cross-unfruitful so Golden De licious Is necessary as asource of viable and compatible pollen to fertilize the blossoms of Wlnesap and Stayman. Second, the peach: The dwarf type peach varie ties and self-fruitful and, when mature, are about 8 feet tall. This makes for easy pruning and spraying as well as s-ace con servation. We have a good selection of varieties, too. Here they are urltVi flneVi maIam lv% ?nsn?nvdii vuivi ui j;(uwiiii5_ sis: Erly-Red Fre (whiter. Georgia Belle (white) is also available and has, for years, been a favorite variety of'peo ple in Piedmont North Caro lina. Third, the pear: I am only recommending two dwarf type pear varieties, both of which are resistant to fire WANTED! MALE HELP Have opening for First Class Auto Mechanic. Good Job for the Right Man. This relatively new or namental tree has prolific and beautiful white flowers; silvery, glossy green foliage in summer changing to crimson to dark red in the fall; the fruits are few, russet colored and incon spicuous. They hold on well into the winter (in the South) and are said to be anractive to birds; growth habit is up right, compact and non-thorny; it is hardy and resistant to fire blight ana other common pear diseases. When mature, Bradford reaches a height of about 50 feet. It appears that this tree would be desirable as a speci men plant in a large yard. It might also be attractive plant ed on both sides of a road leading into an estate. It is also recommended for street planting where it will not com pete with utility wires.
