Rockfish Hub Sponsors Visit To Cancer Clinic The Rockfish Homemakers Club sponsored a visit to the Cancer Center at James Walker Memorial Center In Wilming ton last week. Brenda Is a senior In the Wal lace-Rose HOI High School, where she ranks In the upper quarter of her class of 107 students. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of leadership, scholarship, and promise. While In high school Brenda has participated In Future Homemakers of America Club, Health Careers Club, Library Club, and has served on the staff of the school newspaper. She Is chaplain for the Future Teachers Association for 1966 67, and Is secretary of the Student Council for this year. She also plays basketball. VFW Sponsored Sauare Dance The Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsored a Square Dance on Saturday night In the V.F.W. Building in Wallace. Members and friends from Rose Hill were Included In the number enjoying the affair. Music was by the Black River Boys of Sampson County. Figures were called by James Ward of Rose Hill. Music and figures were of the old fashioned kind-the kind enjoyed by grandparents of the members present. A good time was had by all. Rose Hill Lions Have Successful Broom Sale The Rose HOI Lions Club met on Thursday at the Rose Hill Restaurant. After dinner the members were assigned sec tions of Rose Hill to cover In the sale of brooms and other articles made by the blind. Almost 100% of the local mem bers took part In this worth while project. Most of the town t was covered, but a few streets remaining will be canvassed at a later date. The sum of $296.00 was col lected for the Items sold. This money will be used for the main project of the Lions Club "Helping the Blind." Some of the services rendered by the Lions Clubs Include. Eye examinations, treatment, surgery, glasses, and artificial eyes. They sponsor the eye bank and co-sponsors the state-wide glaucoma clinics. They furnish radios to shut-In blind, and white cane walking sticks to all blind, as well as paying for repairs on talking books, and providing educational material on prevention of blindness. Mr. Verne Cayton, President of the Rose HU1 Lions Club ex pressed great satisfaction In the patlclpation and results of the local club In the Broom Sale. Brenda la a member of the cast for the senior play, "Life With Father" which will be presented April 20,21, and 24th. In this production she will play the role Cousin Cora. Brenda Is the daughter of Mrs. Vergle Matthews, and the late Mr. Matthews of Rose Hill. She has three brothers and two sisters. She Is a member of the Rose Hill Baptist Church, where she Is president of her Sunday School Class, and has served as secretary of her class. Brenda plans to attend Wilm ington College, and wants to be a teacher. Mrs. Ward Returns From 4-H Leader Forum Mrs. Robert Ward returned on Saturday from the 4-H Club Leader Forum conducted by the Department of Citizenship Edu cation and Leadership Develop ment National 4-H Club Foun dation In Washington, D. C. Mrs. Ward was selected to re present Duplin County, because of her outstanding work with 4-H Clubs. States participating In the forum were: Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylva vri a? a - J ? ? ? ? ium, vu-guiia ana uanaaa. Trie total attendance was 130, with 79 of these coming from North Carolina. Mrs. Ward gave the following account of her trip. She said, "The theme of the 4-H Leader Forum was 'Working With Ju nior Leaders'. All of the pro grams and workshops were cen tered on this theme. There were large assemblies, and then they were broken down into small discuss Ion groups, so that every one had the opportunity to be come personally Involved." Mrs. Ward also said, "we could discuss Individual pro blems with leaders like our selves from other states, and other pans of North Carolina. Anyone who has attended meet ings at the Center will tell you that Miss Dorothy Emerson was one of the outstanding speakers. She challenged the group to be aide to sav "I'll be glad to'1 when asked to do a Job. Then act as If you will be glad to do it, and you will be. "Not only were there meet ings, but there were sight-see ing tours as well. On Wednes day each one was glventhe op portunity to visit with her con gressman. On Friday night tnere was a banquet, and flag ceremony with theUnlted States flag, the Canadian, and. the 4-H Club flags followed by thellags from each state represented.
