Mr. Cost In believes that if
more farmers would take ad
vantage of the services offered
by FHA, Duplin's farm Income
could reach $100,000,000 within
the next ten years.
PROGRAM
The FHA Farm Family of
the Year program was begun
by the State Advisory Commit
tee In 1963. The objective of the
program is to select the FHA
farm family In the State that
has made the most progress
since coming on the FHA pro
gram.
Each County Supervisor, In
cooperation with the County or
Area Committee, selects one
family in the unit office area
that nas made the most pro
gress and submits his nomina
tion to the District Supervisor.
In considering nominations,
the State Advisory Committee
evaluated the family's accom
plishments in better farming,
financial progress. Improve
ment to property, better fami
ly living, participation In com
munity affairs, overcoming ad
verse conditions, and any other
accomplishments considered
pertinent.

18 schools whose students sub
mitted papers on the district
level. In East Duplin alone,
there were 54 papers from
which Lavee'a was chosen; so
by estimating the number of
total entries. It Is obvious that
there was wide participation In
the essay contest.
The Lions' Club Peaoe Es
say Contest was sponsored this
year for two purposes. First
of all, the Lions wished to cn
courage teenagers to think po
sitively about peace, being as
sured that their Ideas would
be taken seriously. Secondly,
the Lions hope to gather from
these young writers some po
sitive approaches to Interna
tional understanding.
Lavae, a member of the Ju
nior class at East Duplin High
School, Is very active in student
affairs. She has been an officer
of her class and served on
the committee which helped to
organize the East Duplin Stu
dent Council. She Is a member
of the National Beta Club, The
Future Teachers and the F ranch
Club. Lavae is a school mar
shal, an honor based on aca
demic achievement. Recently
she was chosen a member of
the Service Club, an honorary
organization recognizing stu
dents who have rendered out
standing and unselfish service
to the School. Lavae is a very
active member of the Beulaville
Pentecostal Holiness Church
where she has been secretary
and President of the youth group
and secretary of ner Sunday
School class. In addition she Is
a substitute teacher for the
Sunday School.
The first and second place
winners of the essay contest
will be honored by the Dis
trict Lions' Club at a dinner,
in Kinston. The Beulaville
Lions' Club and East Duplin
High School are Indeed proud of
Lav aw and are pleased to have
so fine a young lady repre
sent them. .

The 70 foot Chimes Tower
has recently been completed and
chimes Installed. The tower Is
made of Tennessee Split Mar- -
ble. About 60 tons of this ma
terial was required for the to
wer which Is supported by 12
inch steel beams. The floor is
real Terrazzo.
This tower Is a convenience
for the property owners and
provides a first aid station as
well as a comfort room. Ills
also from this tower the music
is audloable from the entire
Gardens.
Services this year will be
conducted in front of the towner
where a platform and seating
has been provided.
The chimes will provide ap
propriate music throughout me
day in observance of Easter.
The Jaycees have made pro
visions for the service to be
conducted In the Jams Kenan
School In case of rain, however
they have not been rained out
since the services originated
six years ago.
