Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Dixon of E. Church street took a fast trip to Bristol, Tennessee on last Tuesday and returned on Wednesday. They visited their daughter, Mrs. W. M. Cul hreth. and her family. U.S.N. of Moffltt Field, California has been home on two weeks leave and was with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Giddings, Sr. on East Church St. While here Jerry visit sd his brothers who are based <t Ft. Bragg and otner realtives and friends. Mrs. Louise Littleton of the I Jo-Kay Beauty Salon attended a two-day seminar on hair styling Sunday and Monday. The meet ing was held in the Moose temple on die Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington. Mr. Henry Ward is visiting his brother and sister-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Ward in Richmond, Va. He is accom panied by Miss Sally R. Wil kins. Attend High School Day At State North Carolina State Univer sity's Schools of Forestry, Sci ence and Agriculture observed High School Day on the campus on Saturday, the twenty-first of October. Attending this event from Rose Hill were High School stu dents, Robert Surratt, Bill Bai ter, Melvln Ward, Ken Ayers, DeKalb Wells. David Savage. Bobby Ward, Larry English and Alfred Ward, tecompany lng them were their High School itav-ntji, mrdt utiijr Lois Lanier, Their ^rlculture teacher, Mr. W. S. Butler, Mr. Eugene Wells and Mr. C. W. Surratt, Jr. Twenty-eight hundred (2800) high school pupils from all parts oiNorth Carolina attended the open house. They had a chicken barbeque dinner served them in Reynolds Coliseum and were each one given a complimen tary ticket to the State-Wake Forest game on Saturday night. In the afternoon they toured the campus on buses provided by the University with guides to show them around and ac quaint them with the various schools on the campus. It was a big day for allhlgh schoolers I Bride- Elect Honored In Rose Hill Miss Sue Southerland of Wal lace, whose wedding to Charles L. J arm an of Harrells will take place in November, was honored at a Canasta-Bridge-Linen shower In Rose Hill on Wed nesday night , October 25th. Hostesses were Mrs. Walter Glddlngs, Sr. and Mrs. Thomas Glddlngs, who Is the honoree's sister. Six tables of canasta and bridge were in play, during which the hostesses served the players nuts, mints and Cokes. Later spice cake with whipped cream was served with hot coffee. Ugh score for the bridge players was won by Mrs. J. A. Brady of Wallace, and second high prize went to Mrs.Raleigh Stevens of Wallace. Canasta high score went to Mrs. Katie Peyton of Rose Hill and second high to Mrs. Allen Blanton, of Rose Hill. Bingo was won by Mrs. Joe Edy of Wallace. Playing were Mes dames W. H. Saunders. Robert B. Her ring, Allen Blent on, George Bradshaw, Jimmy Riley, Doug Short. Eddie Oasts. Lee Regis ter and Katie Peyton, all of Rose Hill. Guests from Wallace were mesdames James Southerland, John Forlaw, J. A. Brady, Char les Wills, Raleigh Stevens, Joe Edy, Steve Mills and S. L. Wills. Guests from Harrells were Mrs. Luke Jar man and Miss Sue J arm an. From Teachev the guests were Mrs. Mike Pistner and Mrs. Herbert Tucker. With The Sick Charles T. Cottle has been admitted to the Veterans Hos pital in Durham for treatment for Kidney stones. He would be glad to hear from friends. We nope Charles will soon be well enough to be at home again. Dr. Mc Carver Evangelist At Methodist Church Dr. Clyde McCarver of Wilm ington is guest evengelist at a week of revival services being held at the Rose Hill Metho dist Church this week. Dr. McCarver is District Su perintendent of the Wilmington District. He is active is the Masonic Order serving as Past Master of Orr Lodge 104 A.F. and A.M., and the New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies, and has held other Masonic posts. Recently Rev. McCarver has attended the World Methodist Conference in London. He has received degrees from Duke, Emory University, and the Uni versity of Georgia. Charles Nathan Burgess, from Columbia, S. C? is re sponsible for the music pro gram during the revival. Mr. Burgess studied at the Los An geles College of Mqsic and Art. 'r' and has had a pttAttSlbfiar reer in numerous musicals.1* The revival services end on Friday ? night November 3. Everyone is invited to attend these services. Retired From Service Hllburne E. Knowles, for merly of Rose Hill and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Know les, now of Wallace, has retired from the U. S. Navy. Mr. Knowlss finished High In h and 1) ec nineteen years and was re tired on September 28th. While in the Navy, he was stationed In San Diego. Cali fornia and served In several capacities reaching the rank of Senior Chief Personnel. On one stint of duty he served on the U. S. S. Valley Forge and was In Japanese watersfor ele ven months while on that ship. Mr. Knowles Is married to the former Jane Carr of Wal lace. They have two sons and two daughters. They will con tinue t o live in San Diego, where he Is now employed By Sears. Roebuck and Company. Mr. Hall SptMn To Gardan Club The Rose Hll Garden Club met on October 24th at the home of Mrs. Frank Blanchard. The meeting was conducted by the president, Mrs. Ben Harrell. The speaker, Mr. Thomas Hall, Dean of Instructors at James Sprunt Institute, was In troduced by Mrs. Blanch ard, program chairman. Mr. Hall chose as his title, "Soils In Organic, in Their Relation to Plant Growth". New members Introduced at the meeting were: Mrs. George Bradshaw, Mrs. C.R.Mosback, Mrs. W. T. Blanch ard, Mrs. Charlie Taylor, Mrs. Charles Hawes, Mrs. Donald B. F. Hoyt. . One visitor, Mrs. Erchey La nier was welcomed. The hostess served cheese cake, nuts, and coffee. A door prize of a potted shrub was awarded. Miss Wilkins Speaker At Alumnae Association Miss Mary Vann Wilklns of Rose Hill, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. S. V. Wilklns. wll 1 be guest speaker for a meeting of trie Duplin County Alumnae of the University of North Caro lina at Greensboro. The dinner meeting will be held on Novem ber 10 at the Rose Hill Res taurant at 7 o'clock. All UNC-G Alumnae are urged to attend. Miss WUklns Is a graduate of the Wallace-Rose rill Hgh School. She received her A.B. degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1962, and her Masters from the University of Wisconsin. Miss Wllklns taught in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, Page High School in Greensboro, and the North Carolina School of Per forming Arts In Winston Salnm. Last ysar sha taught at the Uni versity of North Carolina at : ireensboro While in college Miss Wllklns was a member of the Golden Chain, Phi fcia K appa, and was president of Moore Dormitory. At present Miss Wllklns lain the Department of Educational Television, which is pan of the State Department of Educwion. She can be seen every morning at 9 o'clock on Channel teach ing American History. She will have much to tell ner fellow alumna of her work at the col lege and on Educational TV. The Wo man's Club would like to Invite everyone in the community to stop by on Thursday afternoon to see Mrs. Lanier. Many will be surprised to see the number and types of books on the shel ves. The county librarian came last week and brought new boojts. Any book not found in the library may be ordered by Mrs. Lanier from the County library.
