Georgia, and grand son of Mrs. Annie Hawes Ja mes of Rose Hill, was selected one of the to "top teens" for March by the Optimist Club of Sandy Springs, in Atlanta, Ga. The Optimist Club presents the top teen award monthly to students from North Springs and Sandy Springs high schools In recognition .of outstanding achievement In scholarshp, athletics on moral leadership. Jim, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Gregory is a native of Jacksonville, N. C. His mo ther Is the former Miss F a nester James of Duplin County. He Is a sophomore who ma nages to keep a B average while playing varsity football, basket ball and track. He is a scrap py 16-year old boy who landed a starting berth on the varsity football team last season and led his team In intercepted passes. He high-jumps for the track team. He is active in the Inner act dub, ?ay club, Fel lowship of Christian athletes and Spanish Club. Last summer Jim did con W W W W W W W ?traction work for the Atlanta Country Club. Baptist Circles The Circles of the Rose Hill ; Baptist Church met on Monday. March 18, with a program en titled, "Ministry to Migrants". The Louise Tar borough Cir cle met with Mrs. Braitley Hswes. The eight members pre sent enjoyed Russlai tea and sandwioes. Mrs. Lee Sheffield, chairman, presided. Mrs. W. S. Butler gave the Call to Prayer. Mrs. Aubrey Jones presented I the program, assisted by Mrs. I W. S. Butler, Mrs. Norman Teachey, and Mrs. Sheffield. The Katie Murray Circle met I in the home of Mrs. E. G. Mur ray, Sr. The hostess served I lime sherbet and pound cake I with coffee. Mrs. Murray, chalrma n presided. Call to I prayer was given by Mrs. Vlr I glnla Fusseu. Program chair man, Mrs. Howard Cattle, was assisted by Mrs. P. G. Blan I ton, Mrs. W. T. Blanchard, I and Mrs. W. S. Wells, Sr. in presenting the program. The Sarah Johnson Circle met at the church annex with Mrs. Hugh Powell, hostess. Mrs. I William Wells, chairman, call I ed the meeting to order. Call I to Prayer was given by Mrs. I Robert Gore. The program was I presented by Mrs. R. C. Hen I derson, assisted by Mrs. Joe I Casteen, Mrs . Teachey, and I Mrs. Archie Herring. The six members present were served pound cake aid. ice cream. The chldren are shown with the very frst school bus ever used by the school. This bus was a very popular background for class pictures, a source of pride for the dflildren and school arid its modern lines were much admired by the students and adults of our community. Teacher of the fourth grade, Miss Lillian Walton, Is shown standing by the bus driver, Charlie Brown. Miss Walton la Mt. Zion Women Meet The reglar monthly meeting of the Women of Mt.ilon Pres byterian Church was held on Monday night, March 18. The business session was conducted by the president, Mrs. Joe Hart Scott. The program for the evening entitled, "Enlisted and Entrust ed" was presented by Rev. Clark Porter and Mr. Robert Herring. With Tho Sick Mrs. H. L. Sanderson Jr. of the Register Community has been a patent in Memorial _ Hospital In Chapel Hill for the past week. She has been having tests for diagnosis and is ex pected home this week. Mrs. Ward Dies After Short Illness Mrs. Edna Johnson Ward of Rose Hill, died in Wayne Memorial Hospital on Thurs day, March 21. Funeral ser vices were held at the Ret Hill Universalist Church, neat Clinton. Rev. Donald B. F. Hoyt pastor, officiated. Pallbearer: were: Maury Henry Starling of Rose Hill, Page Johnson of War saw. Vann Stanfield of Greens boro, Edgar Wells of Albert son, Craig Smith of East Duplin High School, and Roland Matthis of Clinton. Burial was In the Page Cemetery near Harrells. Mrs. Ward is survived b her husband James A. Ward of Rose Hill; two daughters, Mrs. Peggy Rawheiser of Wilming ton, Del.; Nancy Ward, Uni versity of North Carolina i Chapel Hill; two sons, James E. Ward of Franklin, Va.; Ri chard J. Ward of Wilmington, N. C.; her mother, Mrs. Mary Ennls Johnson of Claude John son of Helmet, Cal.; Maurice Eimis Johnson of New Castle, Del.; four brothers, Harold Johnson of El Paso, Texas; Claude Johnson of Helmet. Cal.; Maurice C. Johnson of Salis bury, Md.; Jesse H. Johnson, Jr. of New Castle, Del.; and seven grandchildren. Her brothers Claude, Maurice, and Jesse at tended the funeral. Mrs. Ward was originally from Westover, Md. She receiv ed her degree from Western Maryland College, Westminis ter, Md. She also attended Gol dle College, Wilmington, Del., and Cecil's Business Collate, Asheville, N. C. Before moving to Rose Hill about twenty-four years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Ward lived in New YorkCity, Cinclnattl, Ohio, T,?,. 0^, ? rs" Boys Inside the bus, left to right are Arthur- L. The plc \ ture was made about 1927 or , 28 when the children were in the 8th or 9th grade with Mr. Beach as their teacher. The class has changed a little, som e of the original members had moved away or changed classes. The Charity Grammar School had combined with Rose Hill, as had the Corinth Community School, ? adding children from the two schools to Rose Hill School. Mrs. Ward has taught at Franklin High School, H arrells; Rose Hill High School; B. F.Grady High School; and was currently teaching at East Duplin High School, near Beulavllle, where a memorial y service was held on Friday Mrs. Ward is Past Matron of the Rehoboth Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Rockfish Home * maker's Club, and the Associa tion of Unlversalist Women. She was past president of the Duplin County Classroom Tea chers Association. Mrs. Ward's friendliness to all was evidenced by the many visitors, flowers, and gifts she received while she was a pa tient In the hospital. Friends from near and far attended the funeral service to pay tribute to her. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to Mr. Ward and family. Ctrl "ZT7 Fayetteville and ? is a nurse. I 3. Ben Graham Fussell lives at Penderlea. 4. Rembert Rlvenbark lives 1 in New Bern and is President of Barbour Boat Works. 5. Theodore Rouse is owner of Duplin Nursery of Rose Hill. 6. Jesse Savage, (could not locate present address). 7. Ernest Teachey now lives in Richmond. Va. I Fourth Row. L A. B. Turner (could not locate address) I 2. Willie Floyd is a farmer of Rose Hill. 3. George Register Brice, better known as Bossy Brice Is I a merchant and farmer in his old community, near Rose Hill. 4. I. J. Johnson became a farmer and trucker of Rose Hill and lost his life In a wreck In 1968. 5. Alvah Hawes is a Baptist minister and lives in Bueno Vista, Virginia. 6. Clifford Johnson Is a hard ware merchant of Rose Hill and is also a farmer at his old home place. 7. Fitzhugh Clark is living In Greenville, N.
