A serene room Kelp* i end when it I* time to relax from the day's tensions. The elassie sim
plicity of this French Empire design combine* with the stretching room of the queen-siae ma tires*
to give a really good night's real. Super-aiae bedding is available in almoat every style to blend
with or set off any deeor.
Take a new lode at that
cherished antique highboy. It
was invented to go with king
size beds.
Many people think people
size bedding is something new.
Actually, some of the famous
beds of the fifteenth, sixteenth,
and seventeenth centuries
dwarf our king-size beds. The
Great Bed of Ware, now in the
Victoria and Albert Museum
in London, measures nearly
twelve feet square and rises
well over seven feet to the top
of the canopy. In Stowe, a bed
nine feet nine inches long and
nine feet wide was used for the
visit of Frederick, Prince of
Wales. The record size could
well be that of a bed made for
the marriage of Philip the
Good of Burgundy and Isabel,
daughter of John I of Portu
gal, In 1429. It was said to
nave been 18 feet long and 12
feet wide.
Even ordinary beds of the
last centuries could be called
king-size. In a day when most
men were five-foot-four, a six
foot long bed offered true
people-size comfort. To get the
Because Colonial rooms
were small so that they could
be heated with only a fireplace,
antique six-foot beds filled the
room. If it were a double bed
(and their double beds were
approximately the same size
as today's old-fashioned 54
inch by 75-inch bed that is
rapidly being replaced) there
was scarcely space for any
other furniture.
Thus came the antique high
boy. It stacked his chest of
drawers on top of her chest of
drawers to conserve floor space
and make room for a good bed.
The famous cabinet makers
of the Eighteenth Century be
lieved the most important fea
ture of any bedroom was the
bed. So they designed beauti
ful beds, ana scaled the rest of
the bedroom pieces so they
would fit.
It was not until the Victor
ian era that bedrooms became
big and bedroom furniture
heavier. Even then, New
England houses tended to
have their upstairs rooms
small and unhealed. To save
space, the washstand doubled
as a holder for toilet articles.
The bachelor chest fit into a
small area.
For the antique lover, to
day's king-size beds offer
dramatic decorating possibili
ties. They are available with
sturdy frames which do not
require headboards or foot
boards. This gives you many
opportunities for individual
ized draping or custom head
board treatments.
One decorator pushed a
king-size bed against the wall,
installed a brass hook such as
those used for hanging lamps,
and draped a canopy of fabric
which echoed the graceful
curves of the antique kidney
shaped dressing table.
Another bedroom decorator
achieved a four-poster effect
by hanging draperies from
the ceiling at each corner of
the king-size bed, gathering
them with standard drapery
department rosettes.
And for perfect coordina
tion, still another decorator
sewed four 84-inch draperies
end to end to make a king-size
dust ruffle which she attached
to a queen-size, 80 x 60 inch
sheet She slipped the sheet
between the mattress and box
swings, and topped the whole
effect with a queen-size spread.
Result? A Colonial quilt-and
dust-ruffle bed, people-size.
