Chemicals In Combination Control Tobacco Suckers Chemicals now control most of the suckers on North Caro lina tobacco, thus eliminating one of the most dreaded Jobs in tobacco production - hand suck ering. Growers are now using a combination of contact aid sys temic materials to make more effective the use of chemical sucker treatments. The contact materials are applied a the early flower stage to control most small suckers. This early applica tion of the corn act chemical al lows the farmer to delay us ing malelc hydrazlde until to bacco leaves have more fully developed. Maleic hydrazlde used too early has been associated with ? poor leaf quality in the past. 1 S. N. Hawks and Dr. W. K. I Collins, extension tobacco spe- I ciallsts a North Carollna~Stae University, point out tha the use of chemicals to control suckers is another way tobacco growers are meeting labor problems and cutting costs. "Higher net profits from to bacco - tha's the goal of our educaional program," the spe cialists comment. "Proper use of maerials now available to control suckers can elimlnae hand suckering aid represent a large labor savings for the grower." In tests last year, s contact chemical was applied a early flower stage and was followed seven to ten days later with a standard application of three quarts per acre of malelchy drazide. This treatment resulted in the highest per acre return. The yield and value were In creased and the suckers were almost completely controlled by using the two chemicals in stead of one. Where the maleic hydr aside was used alone * the Tall flow er stage, die tobacco yield was 3,479 pounds per acre and die value per acre was $1,649. There was an average of 2.5 suckers on each plant. Where die contact chemical was used at early flower and malelc hydrazlde applied it full flower, die yield was 2.667 pounds per acre with a value of $1,715. The number of suckers per plant was 1.4. "Good sucker control is Just as important as ever and will become even more Important as mechanical harvesters are used," Collins and Hawks said. ^Target, Guns Washington, O.
