Jail Complex
To Be Reedy By
End Of Month
The completion end occu
pancy of the new jail complex is
expected by the end of the
month. A report of substantial
completion of the, county law
enforcement center was given
by the architect. Tom Pegram.
and builder, Tom Carter, to the
County Commissioners
Tuesday. Dixie Construction
Company of Wallace is the
general contractor for the
S600,000-plus project.
Pegram said the office portion
' of the complex can be occupied,
but prisoners cannot be put into
the jail section until the fire
alarm is operational. This is
expected to be completed this
week, the Board was informed.
The report showed that six
lavoratories are not yet installed
due to supply delay because of a
strike against the manufacturer.
Two pieces of bullet-proof glass
haven't been installed as the
originally ordered pieces were
broken in transit.
A reward of S2.500 for infor
mation leading to arrest and
conviction of arsonists in the
county was approved by the
Board. Prior to that action.
Sheriff Elwood Revelte siad
residents, particularly in the
Wallace jrea. have expressed
fear because of numerous sus
I picious fires in that area
recently.
Three houses, all unoccupied,
and three outbuildings have
burned recently. The latest inci
dent was December 21 when an
unoccupied dwelling owned by
leighton Hall, near Safe on
N.C. 41. west of Wallace,
burned at the same time an un
occupied dwelling owned by Joe
Bryant, Jr. oq the River Road
south of Wallace was destroyed.
A month earlier, the former
Bryant home place on the River
Road burned. The six buildings
all belonged to Bryant, Hall, or
S. Franklin Williams, a farmer
and also on the Board of
Commissioners.
Bryant has offered a $500
reward leading to the arrest and
? conviction of arsonists.

system covering an area from
Kenansville along N.C. 50 to
Dobson's Chapel, on to Regis

In other action, the Board
heard J.F. Hamilton, Warren
Bostic. and Billy Quinn of Route
I. Magnolia, protest inhumane
treatment of animals, particu
larly citing the case of a dog tied
outside with nq shelter, and a
cow that was down.
The Board discussed
improving collection of back
taxes with Tax Supervisor Frank
Moore and Collector Leland T.
Grady, and Tax Attorney W.E.
Craft. It was declared that 5-6
percent uncollected taxes was
too much. Moore said that by
the end of the fiscal year, June
. 30. the county usually had
collected at least 94% of the
taxes assessed. Currently, he
said, about 75% of the taxes, or
S3.192.000 has been collected.
