While we are lookins ?tward to a great year with some impossible and astonishing moments, let us reminisce just a little back tty-ough 1980. Mindfully, we will only try to capture some of the highlights that were recorded for history. ^During the year we saw a lot of changes at the various clubs for which the 19th Hole carries regular golf news Aroughout the year. Not only did we see the man in the White House go, but Rpckfish Country Club's Rick Atkins was replaced by Jim Finch as club pro; we also saw Bernie Mayer leave ? Rkmblewood Country Club to be replaced by Richard Weston; and we saw Rick Green replace Bill Howe at Duplin. ^Wallace's "Mr. Chevy" Russ moved into the club president's job at Rockfish. Topsail Plantation Golf and Country Club's new owners, Nash Johnson & Sons of Rose Hill, renamed the course Chanticleer Country Club under Pro Don Cross. Mount Olive's Bryce Ficken was named new head at Southern Wayne CC. Pat ^lullins, Lynn Boney, Jim jpss and Randy Mattocks won the 10th annual Art Myers Golf Tournament staged at Rockfish of Wallace. Mount Olive's legendary Cletus Brock, former Duplin member, was named to Carolina Golf Hall of Fame's executive committee. i Duplin's head, Ed Rector, was re-elected to serve dur ing '80. Superstar Billy Potter and Henry Carlton won the annual Two-Man at Lakewood CC. Warsaw's Kermit Anderson was named to new President Lloyd Par ker's cabinet at DCC. Wallace's sure-fire superstar out at Rockfish, Harry Carlton, was selected Golfer of the Week. Deep Run's Thomas Salter records ace at Ramblewood CC. Duplin's Buster Johnson teamed with Charles "Moose" Anderson to win the annual Member-Member tourney at DCC. Beulaville's Wiley Blizzard records ace at Ramblewood CC. Kenans ville's talented Mark Vinson breaks hundred at DCC. Davis Lee, the man from Alabama and former club champ at Rockfish and Duplin, visits area. Lee, better known as "Big D," was the sparkplug, the mover of men, at Duplin and Rockfish some years ago. Warsaw's Jene Thompson chosen Golfer of the Week. Duplin's annual spring "shindig" a success. Ramblewood's Richard Weston wins National Long Driving Contest at Echo Farms. Jane Blanton scores hole-in-one at Rockfish. Ginton's Tommy Britt re cords ace at Coharie CC. Buster Johnson, four times dub champ at DCC, teamed with Dennis Beasley of Mag nolia to win annual Member Guest at Lake wood. Richard Weston hired as new pro at Ramblewood. Norma Teachey, Jo Wickline and Sally Jo Houston win Ram blewood superball. MO's Bryce Ficken records ace at Southern Wayne CC. Goldsboro's superstar Clarence "Popcorn" Rose chosen Golfer of the Week. Rudy Hasty and partner Billy Potter team to win Duplin's first annual Two-Man. Mag nolia's Bill Potter and Melvin Pope, the two Big P's on the local tour, win gas tourney. Duplin's young golf stand out, Jimmy West, voted MVP at Wayne Country Day. Clinton's legendary George Williams won the 13th annual Coharie Invitational. Kenansville's super-plug MV takes lessons from DB. DCC's Garrett Ludlum voted MIH on local level. Deep Run's Joel Harris teamed with Kinston's Bob Cato to win the annual Mount Olive Jaycee Pickle Classic at SWCC. Pink Hill's Mike Hatch club head at Ramblewood. Pete Melville and Walter Daniels win annual Member-Guest at Rockfish of Wallace. Duplin's Bob Lee shares in year's greatest moment when flusterated golfing partner Harold Matthis bladed "a goose is a goose." Former all-time great at Duplin and later at Southern Wayne, Murray "Bronco" Cashwell is back on the links following an eye injury some years back. Joe Houston, Connie Carlton, Bobby Smith and Dennis Beasley win Captain's Choice at Lake wood. Carol Jones, Sally Houston, Jo Jones sand Shirley Pickett win first annual superball invitational at Ramblewood. Clinton's George Williams wins Duplin Invitational for fifth time. Dan Robinson and Billy Apple win Wallace Jaycee Two-Man best ball at Rock fish. Superstar Billy Potter fired seven-under 63 at Lakewood, one stroke off the record. Wallace's Harry Carlton, "jogger of the year," at Rockfish. Milton Nowell and partner Clarence Rose teamed to win Member Guest staged at SWCC. Warsaw's John Weatherly voted Rotarian of the Year. Ron Robinson, John Mc Guire, Jeff Holtom and Mar sha Prestage win superball at Duplin. Former Hidden Valley Pro Rick Green re places 6ill Howe as pro at Duplin CC. George Williams, Bobby Malpass, Howard Woodall and Lynwood Daughtry win N.C. Heart Fund Tournament at Coharie CC. Hope you play all the golf you want to in '81.
