MRS DAVID PHILLIPS ? Mrs. Phillips First Runner-Up In Mrs. NC Pageant by Jonl Nethercutt "A friend who had spon ^red me in pageants while in high school called and told me about the pageant," ex plained Mrs. Evelyn Phillips of Warsaw who last week in Myrtle Beach, S.C., was named first runner-up in the Mrs. America - North Caro lina Pageant. Also, Mrs. Marilyn Phelps of Warsaw was third runner-up. DUPLIN TIMES was unable reach her for an interview, y ? The pageant, along with the pageants for South Carolina and Virginia, were held af the Hilton with preliminaries on Tuesday and the finals Wednesday, Feb. 25. "There were II contes tants in the North Carolina Pageant,"1 'said- Mrs. Phillips. "We were judged ? evening gown and swim it competition as well as poise, personality and a personal interview." ?* Mrs. Phillips was the overall winner in the swim suit competition. She was sponsored by her husband. David, and several Duplin County businesses. Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Phelps were awarded trophies. The winner will ?avel on an expense-paid ip to Las Vegas for national competition. Mrs. Phillips teaches remedial math at James Kenan High School. She is a member of a garden club in Warsaw. She expressed her hobbies as tennis and travel ing. She is the wife of David Phillips. During her personal inter view, Mrs. Phillips said she was asked about ERA, the competency program, Rea gan's economic package and its effect on the educational system, and the priority of parents or the school in teaching sex education. In swimsuit competition she wore deep purple. Her evening gown, which was designed by a known de signer of Miss U.S.A. pageant gowns in Greenville, S.C. was red sequinejl with a right side leg slit, off shoulder and one sleeve, with a cut out skin colored material lined with rhine stones. Mrs. Phillips noted that jndytng jcategories for the i Mrs, N.C. Pageant have changed for the comtempo rary woman. Judging, until the '70s, used to comprise of homemakers with competi tion in flower arranging and table decor, she said. Mrs. Phillips explained that due to lack of interest, the pageant began not only to include homemakers, but career women who were also home makers. Mrs. Phillips wished to express her appreciation to Jo Jones and Judy Hunter for their assistance in preparing for the pageant, and special thanks to Mary Sanderson .'orter, a former Miss Duplin County who accompanied Mrs. Phillips to the pageant. ? Other visitors during the weekend were Dfcs. Susan and A1 Payne of Durham. Visitors of Mrs. Viola W. Quinn during the weekend were the Bobby Quinns and Karen of Zebulon. the Jimmy Quinns and two children of Rcigelwood, Mrs. Thomas Quinn and two children of Hampton, Va., Mrs. Wilma Gray Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Pittman of Jackson ville. The Pittmans met their daughters here, Tammy from UNC-G and Cindy from UNC-CH. They all came to help Mrs. Viola Quinn cele brate her birthday. The Reverends Ann and David Dicky spent a couple of days at Valdese last week with her parents and several days in Tennessee with friends. Mrs. Alton Newton spent Tuesday night in Kinston with her sister, Mrs. Nina Boone. Mr. and Mrs. Hampton Baker of Beulaville had supper Friday night with Mrs. A.T. Outlaw. Mrs. Thomas Hughes spent a couple of days last week with her sister. Mrs. Belle Stallings in Wallace. Mrs. Edward S. Kornegay of Wilmington spent a couple of days here last week with Mrs. N.B. Boney. They visited the T.J. Tolsons in Goldsboro Wednesday. Birth Announced Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Whit man of Beulaville, formerly of Kenansville, announce the birth of a son, Richard Gerald on February 28, 1981 in Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston. Mrs. Whitman is the former Sheral Futrell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Futrell of Beulaville. The paternal grandparent is Mrs. Rodolph Whitman of Kenansville. Bride-Elect Showered Miss Debbie Holmes, bride-elect of Stacey Hunter, was given a miscellaneous floating showere Saturday night by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Pearsall Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She was presented a corsage upon her arrival in the fellowship hall of the church. She was assisted by the groom-elect in opening thfcfCjglfts. which < were listed by Gloria Brown and displayed by the honoree's mother, Mrs. Preston Holmes. For refreshments, the ladies of the church served cake squares topped with a pink rosebud and iced drinks along with salted nuts and mints. Couples Club Mr. and Mrs. Bill McKay were hosts for the Couples Club Saturday night. Bridge was played at three tables. Among those playing were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Fife, Mr. and Mrs. Doc Brinson, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Carr, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth King, also Mr. and Mrs. Zan Stepp. Hi^n score was won by Doc Brinson and low score bj Judy Carr. For refreshments, the guests enjoyed beef sticks with pumpernickel ind rye bread, cheese dip and crackers, sugar cookies, chocolate candy mix. orange crush cake and choice of coffee or coke. Liberty Hall Bridge Club Mrs. Stuart Hall was hostess for the Liberty Hall Bridge Club Wednesday night with Mesdanies H.D. Taylor. E.C. Tyndall and Sue Neil Lcntz as visiting players. Between progres sions. Mrs. Hall served lemon pie and coffee. Mrs. W.M. Ingram won the high score prize for members and Mrs. Tyndall for the visitors. Kontract Klub Plays Bridge On Thursday night. Mrs. Stuart Hall was hostess for the Kenansville Kontract Klub with Mrs. E C. Tyndall as the visiting player. High score for members was won by Mrs. Sheldon Swann and Mrs. Tyndall was also given a gift. For refreshments. Mrs. Hall served jello .ind lemon cookies with coffee. Many thanks also to the hospital personnel who ministered to him so graciously during^is stay at Duplin General and New Hanover Memorial. *0:*> I Atkin-Lanier Nuptial Vows Said A double ring ceremony was performed Saturday, Feb. 14 uniting in marriage Miss Kimberly Dee Atkin of Holts Summit, Missouri, and Allen Warren Lanier Jr. of Mokane, Missouri. The two o'clock service was conducted by the Rev. G. Dale Norfolk at Union Hill Baptist Church in Holts Summit. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul E. Atkin of Holts Summit. The groym's parents are Mr. and . ? Mrs. Allen Warren Lanier Sr. of Chinquapin. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of silesta chiffon trimmed in silk venise lace with a sweet heart neckline and a pleated skirt. Miss Rhonda L. Richard son of Holts Summit served the bride as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were sisters of the bride: Miss Kristen L. Atkin and Mrs. C. Douglas Case, both of Holts Summit. The bride's attendants wore Grecian style dresses of silk with rope belts. Mark Simmons of Tebbetts served the groom as best man. Groomsmen were Jim Hall of Fulton and Corey Lanier of Chinquapin. Ushers were Keith Buchanan of Fulton and Robert A. Holt and Kurt Williams, both of Holts Summit. Holly Howard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Howard of Russellville, was flower girl. Ring bearer was Noland C. Holdebrand, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto N. Hildebrand of Route 2. For her daughter's wed ding. Mrs. Atkin chose a deep pink gown with match ing accessories. The mother ?trf the gro<nn. Mrs. Lanier, wore a cotillion blue gown with matching coat and ac cessories. The mothers were presented with long stemmed red roses by the bride and groom A reception followed the ceremony at the church fel lowship hall. The bride attended Jeffer son City High School and is employed by the Missouri State Professional Registra tion and Licensing Board. The groom attended East Duplin High School and is employed at the Callaway Nuclear Plant at Reform. The couple will reside in Mokane. The groom's parents hosted a rehearsal dinner Friday at the church. Those attending the wedding from Chinquapin were Mr. and Mrs. Warren L,anier. Mrs. Amos Lanier, Mrs. Frank Harold Lanier and Cor?;y Lanier. Allen is formerly of Chin quapin and is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Lanier and Mrs. Kail Brown, all of Chinquapin, and the great grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Chesley Williams of Beula ville. Alpha Eta Meets The Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met recently for a breakfast meeting in a Kost Hiil restaurant. Miss Velma Murphy offered the invo cation after President Mary Anna Grady called the meet ing to order. The research committee presented a most informative program entitled "Education of the Future." Mrs. Nina Garner, chairman of that committee, introduced the theme and various members of the panel who spoke in depth about various areas that are experiencing change and will continue to undergo change. Dr. Alice Scott re viewed the Three-tier pro gram and its implications for the future; Mrs. Charlotte Dupree emphasized the necessity for more parental involvement and its favor able effects upon the aca demic progress of students; Mrs. Magdalene Stancil ex plored the future of the local school system by the ad vancement of technology and the possibility of the imple mentation of the master teacher concept. Mrs. Pearl McGowen shared statistical reports predicting the roles of college in the future and Miss Vickie Davis spoke about changes expected in testing, vouchers and school law. Mrs. Virginia Ouinn discussed the functions of new media materials includ ing electronic games, com puiers ana microium. Committee chairmen Mrs. Hazel Kornegay, Mrs. Mar garet Scott. Mrs. Janice Grady, Mrs. Magdalene Stancil. Mrs. Faye Quinn and Mrs. Darlene Raybon re ported for the membership, finance, nominations, com munications. scholarship and world finance committees, respectively. Plans were also initiated for the state convention to be held in Charlotte, April 24-2b. After th<f singing of the Delta Kappa Gamma song and the reading of the collect, the president adjourned the meeting. Hostesses were Mrs. Ethel Rackley, Mrs. Harriet Phillips.
