Skipper's Well Drilling Co. of Lcland submitted the next lowest bid of $47,500. $22 higher than the winner. Other bidders were Snydnor of-Richmond. Va., with $67,085 and Layne Atlantic Co. of Norfolk. Va.. with $67,652. Because the contractor plans to subcontract the well, the town had to waive a contract stipulation that the prime cortlractor do 75 per cent of the work on the project. The C.W. Brinklev Well Drilling Co. of Rose Hill will drill the well for the contractor. The contract calls f->r a two-inch test weli to ? mine if water quantity ao^ quality warrant drilling the 10-inch well about 30 feet from the town water tower near the town hall. A nearby well failed when the casing 1 shifted, preventing the pump shaft from revolving. If the test well fails to meet requirements, a new well location will have to be found. Town Administrator Steve Routh indicated. The new well is to be 400 to 600 feet deep. The deepest of the town's present nine wells is 330 feet. The water level has been dropping in the wells. The town pumps about 100 million gallons of water a month with the J.P. Stevens Co. plants using about 88 percent of it. according to Mayor Melvin Cording. Plans to construct 800 feet of 12-inch sewer line to a proposed 40-unit townhouse development were discussed with Harris Brown of Weaver Construction Co.. the build er. The project will be lo cated on Raleigh Street, just south of the town limits. Brown said the company will ask the town to annex the site. Cost of the line is esti mated at J18.000. The town will charge the company a SI5.000 tap-on fee to cover most of the cost. Brown estimated the value nf the project for tax pur poses when completed will be about SI.5 million, which *ould bring the town about 510.000 in ad valorem taxes.
