Funds For Duplin
Roads Approved
Funds for all but one
project on Duplin County's
secondary roads for the next
fiscal year were approved by
the county commissioners
this past week.
The state allocated the
county $659,677 for secon
dary road repairs and main
tenance. Ted Funderburk.
district engineer for the state.
Department of Transporta
tion. listed eight projects for
upgrading and one for
widening.
The county commissioners
objected to the proposed
: widening of State Road 1004
between N.C. 11 and SR 1300
near Summerlin's Cross
roads. The board wanted to
have the $136,000 allocated
for this project applied to
paving dirt roads.
Funderburk said he would
check on that possibility and
report to the board at its May
17 meeting. He told the
board allocation restrictions
require 20 percent of the
secondary road money to be
used for improving paved
roads.
Projects approved include:
SR 1516 for 1.3 miles from
SR 1700 to N.C. 11 north of
Kenansville ? grade, drain,
stabilize and replace bridge
with pipe, for $79,000; SR
1816 near Chinquapin, 0.3
mile ? grade, drain, base
and page, $20,000; SR 1132,
a loop from N.C. 41 to N.C.
41 west of Wallace, 1.5 miles
? grade drain and stabilize.
$68,000; SR 1732, from SR
1703 to SR 1705 north of
Beulaville, one mile ?
$30,000; SR 1371. from SR
1306 to N.C. 403 east of
Calypso, 0.9 mile ? base
and pave, $30,000; SR 1903.
I from N.C. 24 to SR 1107 east
of Warsaw. 1.4 miles ?
grade, drain and stabilize.
$63,000; SR 1814. from SR
1802 to SR 1800 north of
Chinquapin. 1.2 miles ?
grade, drain and stabilize,
$54,000; and SR 1718, from
SR 1719 to N.C. 41 cast of
Beulaville, 1.1 miles ?
grade, drain and stabilize.
Wallace Man
Putting His
Time Into
Silhouettes
Tom Lee, 59, of Wallace
has finally found something
he likes to do after a lot of
years doing many other
things ? some of which he
enjoyed and some he didn't.
What he likes to do is
create silhouettes of people
on copper, something he saw
an artist do during a N.C.
A/aleu Festival in Wilming
ton several years ago.
"1 thought, as I watched. I
can do that." Lee said.
For the last two years,
that's what he's been doing,
at Myrtle Beach. S.C.. dur
ing the summers and at
Birdtown Traiding Post in
Cherokee in the fall.
Because the World's Fair
.is in Knoxvillc. Tenn.. this
summer. Lee plans to go to
the trading post in early
summer. Western North
Carolina communities hope
to benefit from the expected
influx of tourists to the
eastern Tennessee city for
the fair.
Lee was born in bcotts
Hill. He attended Topsail
High School in Hampstead
and Oak Ridge Military Aca
demy near Greensboro. He
later attended the National
Academy of Broadcasting in
New York.
Following his school stint,
he'took a job with a Myrtle
Beach radio station, but left
it fo join his brother working
in what were then Lee's
Stores. The stores are now
controlled by Pope's Stores
of San ford.
? While in Myrtle Beach, he
also performed as a stand-up
comic.
Lee was working for a
Wilmington automobile firm
when he saw the artist doing
the work with copper.
He described his present
vocation as "not like these
9-to-5 jobs. You have the
satisfaction of knowing that
you did this, that you created
this picture and you did it by
yourself. You can look back
over the day and say, 'Here
is what I did, I'VE done
I something.'"
I ? i '? ? ? ii ?
$49,000.
The priority numbers of
these projects range from 1
to 36. Several high-priority
projects had to be passed
over because of right-of-way
acquisition difficulties.
Other work will include 1
reconstruction of short sec- j
tions of unpaved road and
spot stabilization of school
bus routes on State Roads
1737. 1118, 1138, 1818, 1968.
1731. 1541, 1566, 1362, 1559,
1355, 1352 and 1907, a total
of $92,000.
Reserved for overruns,
road additions and fire de
partment and rescue squad
driveways is $38,677.
