in Rose Hill during the early
1940s. As an experiment.

man J.B. Fussell grew
Alettuce to be shipped out of
North Carolina to eastern
and midwestern grocers. Re
ports in a June 1941 issue of
the DUPLIN TIMES -
HERALD stated 1,000 crates
of lettuce were shipped from
Fussell's farm. Each crate
held'3.4 bushels. Fussell
hired 100 workers to harvest
the.lettuce crop and quickly
wash, and pack the produce
for shipment. Each crate was
?ined with duro-pack paper
which held a layer of crushed
ice around the heads of
lettuce. The process began
early one morning and ended
late in the night with crates
of iced-down lettuce loaded
on refrigerator trucks tecdy
for transporting.
The idea of shipping fresh
produce did not stop with
lettuce. Fussell also shipped
A2 crates of beans the same
week of the first lettuce
shipiqent in June of 1941. No
further updates were printed
in the TIMES-HERALD on
Fussell's experiment.
However, todav super
markets all across our nation
have all types of fresh vege
tables any time of the year.
