JSTC May Help Train
Stevens Mill Workers
James Sprunt Technical
College hopes to reagin lost
fundine to start a training
program for J.P. Stevens Cq.
workers. President Carl Price
told the Board of Trustees
last Thursday night.
Price said the company has
asked the school to train
workers on new machinery
being installed in Stevens'
Wallace mills.
The school, alorfg with
other state institutions, lost 6
percent of its state funding to
statewide budget cuts.
Because of the nature of the
Stevens request. Price said,
.he will ask the state De
partment of Community Col
leges for additional funding,
which he said he believes the
school will get.
James Sprunt's 140-stu
dent enrollment increase in
the fall quarter, compared
with a year ago, was at
tributed in large part to a
computer program which
was begun this fall and
attracted 118 students.
Dean ot Students Alfred
Wells said 8S3 students en
rolled in the school's fall
quarter, which ends Dec. 16.
That is an increase of 17
percent over the 713 enrolled
a year ago. The winter
quarter will open Jan. 4 and
continue until March 27.
Wells said the effect of
depressed economic condi
tions on enrollment could not
be determined. He told the
trustees that more students
than ever have said they are
unable to pay the school's
$39 tuition.
Several federal grants
assist 308 students at the
school. They include:
? Pell Grant (formerly
the Basic Educational Oppor
tunities Grant) of $115,993,
which assists 247 students
with tuition, books and
transportation.
? The college work
study grant of $30,220, which
aids 41 students who work at
the college for $3.35 per
hour.
? The specialized edu
cational opportunities grant
of $4,751, which helps 20
students with, tuition, books
and transportation.
Most of the school's stu
dents come from Duplin
County. The school also
serves some students from
nearby counties such as
Sampson, Pender and
Onslow.
Wells said 545 students
are enrolled for full-time
study and 303, part-time. <
