Celebrate
Black History
Week
H. E. Smith Junior High
School celebrated Black
History Week Feb. 7-11,
according to Zettie Williams,
teacher.^Even though Feb
ruary fs Afro-American
History Month. E.E. Smith
presented its highlights on
the above dates. The theme
is "The United States Con
stitution and the Black
American." The social
studies department served as
the planning committee.
Each department pre
sented an activity daily
showing the achievements
and contributions of Black
Americans. Such activities
included posters, research
papers, supplementary
readings, quizzes, speeches,
skits, panels, bulletin board
displays, listening to record
ings and viewing films and
Itlmstrips. All of the activi
ties culminated Friday with
an assembly program.
During this program. 18
consultants of various
careers gave an overview of
their attainments followed by
a question, answer and ob
servation period. The con
sultants were Henry Moore
Jr.. trooper with the NX.

It was a gratifying ex
perience for both students
and teachers to' find the
many factors unraveled bv
the contributions as they
related fit the constitution
and the Black American. It
svas further brought into
focus a new lesson for stu
dents and teachers since
many had no previous know
ledge ot Black contributions
to American history.
A stimulation ot high
motivation prompted main
students to express an in
terest in putting more em
phasis on Black history in the
curriculum, according to
Mrs. Williams.
