I Jot Lanier | ?0H 1 "< girvvj. .... I Several little tidbits this week. . .First off, have you .4 noticed the colorful, eye-pleasing flowers at the end of L Kenansville's business district street ? the one that butts up to the courthouse. 1 am told this beautiful flowering garden is the' handiwork of Violet Phillips. As Wilming ton's TV reporter of years gone by, Ben McDonald, used to say ? "A tip of the old and battered homburg (hat.)" ???*? At a recent county commissioners meeting, the commissioners agreed to a salary increase for Ann Hunter. Mrs. Hunter runs the county computer. Several people have asked me how much her increase was. . .Well, she has had no increase in salary as of July 11. The commissioners failed to state when or how much the salary increase was to be when they were agreeing she was to receive one. The only increase of late was for Sylvia Wiggins at the landfill, who will assume the gate keeper's duties as well as the ones she had previously. . . Which sounds like a good deal for the county. . .1 am not too sure how good a deal it is for Mrs. Wiggins. After all, there is only so much one can do in an eight-hour period. Thomas Hodges of Warsaw was complaining of the recent increase in water rates. . .Well, actually, 1 suppose the correct term is sewer rates. The sewer rates were increased. This is a bureaucratic was of increasing the water rates. . .Rather than saying the water rates are going to double, they say the sewer rates are going to be 100% of the water rates. . .Now, that sounds like you are getting something extra for your money. . .It's just a sneaky way of getting more money. . .But. back to Mr. Hodges. . .He said the town was wasting money by the way it handled its labor. Hodges stated he saw two men reading the water meters with one sitting in a truck writing down the figures the other man would give him. "If the man can read meters, why not let him write them down'.' The man in the truck is not needed," says Hodges. . .Another incident cited by Hodges. . ."I saw one man spraying weed-killer on grass in the sidewalk cracks. . .There was another man along telling him where to spray." Hodges went on to say he and other taxpayers in Warsaw have to pay for this wastefulness. > . ***** Congratulations to Larry Simmons of Warsaw. He was named the new town maintenance supervisor. I am glad for him and his advancement; however, I am sorry the maintenance crew is to lose its best and most dependable ' worker... *???? I was watching the Nashville Network on cable the other night and listening to that good old country music when all of a sudden up pops a couple of familiar faces. The show's host. Ralph Emery, was talking with couples from Rose Hill. . .The Whaleys and Bradshaws. The program was "Nashville Now" and Mrs. Whaley got herself a tee-shirt. . .Ain't no telling where you might see these Duplin County folks. . .Son-of-a-Gun Plans Finalized For Exibition Space At Fair Key' personnel for com mercial and educational ex hibits for the 1983 Duplin County Agribusiness Fair met recently to finalize exhibit space for this year's fair.
