FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Archie Jay Patterson of Route 2, Pink Hill, were feted by their children on Saturday. June 25 in honor of their 50th weddine anniversary. The celebration was held at the Steak Barn in Goldsboro and hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Patterson and their two daughters, Bonnie and Sherry, all of Route 2, Mount Olive, and by Mr. and Mrs. Archie Jay Patterson II and their children, Katie. Jay and Gtnny. all of Tabb, Va. The couple was married June 25, 1933 in Rochester, Michigan. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED - Mr. and Mrs. George E. Howard of Wilson announce the engagement of their daughter, Rebecca Lynn to Mr. Timothy Anthony Swider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Swider of 2728 Lullington Dr. Miss Howard is the granddaughter of Mrs. Gladys Howard of Pink Hill and the late Earl Howard. A July 30th wedding is planned at the Winstead United Methodist Church in Wilson. Kevin Delaney To Perform In Duplin County The Duplin County Arts Council will sponsor JLevin Delaney in various locations in Duplin County during the i week of July 17. Delaney has been nick named the "American Son" ind this has given him the name for his album. He grew np in Northern Virginia but nas spent most of his last 16 ,-ears in North Carolina and :he South. His early interest n different kinds of music ed him to become a singer ind performer and an ac :omplished musician on the guitar, fiddle, banjo, auto larp. concertina and dul :imer. He learned most of his nusic from his travels and lirect contact with many nusicians and performers hroughout the U.S. and the Sritish Isles. This has given lim insight into and appre :iation of the manv American music styles. Delaney was in the N.C. visiting artist program for four years, where he per formed over 500 times for 5,000 people. Here he j learned to play for every type of group in every imaginable situation including schools, arts councils, civic clubs, churches, nursing homes, hospitals, business and in dustry, and numberous ap pearances on regional radio and television. He has also played in many other areas of the country and abroad including New York, Phila delphia, Wusb.ngton, D.C., Ireland and Mexico. Kevin enjoyes his work and tries to incorporate the needs of his audience to his presentation. Every song or tune is explained so as to bring- out the character and history of that particular piece. Years of experience have given his performances an educational, entertaining, informal and warm air. CBA Summer Project The Duplin County Arts Council announces coopera tion with the Duplin County Community-based Alterna tives Task Force in the for mation of a special summer Arts Cart for specially invited students. The county com missioners have approved this program which began July 11. The program is designed to provide mean ingful and positive summer creative experiences in art disciplines. The new pro gram will consist of two teachers, a supervisor, and volunteers as needed, and approximately IS children at each of the two sites. The responsibility of selection of students has been that of the CB'A directors, local princi pals and teachers and other individuals working with Duplin youth. This year's program will encompass two geographic areas which have been de termined by the CBA project director. The sites to be used will be the area schools of Warsaw Elementary and Rose Hill-Magnolia Elemen tary. 1 Home or neighborhood pick-up and transportation to and from the sites will be a part of the program. The eight sessions (four at each site, will be of 2-3 hour durations each. Travel time is non-inclusive. The dates at Warsaw will be July 11, 18, 25 and August 1, and the dates at Rose Hill-Magnolia will be July 12, 19, 26 and August 2. The primary focus will be to involve the groups in four activities which will incor porate various art forms and media: 1) individual expres sions to build positive self concept to achieve unique recognition. Art disciplines and tops to be considered as experiences will include "lite Mad Sculptor: clay, objects, food." 2) Paired experiences - to work directly with a partner and promote positive peer relationship^. Art disciplines and topics to be considered as experiences - "The Wild & The Wooly: ?s : vanuuiimg, masiia auu vuo tumes," "Inside Bubbles: Painting within a Wind Tun nel" 3) Whole group ex periences - to involve the entire group in decision making, working and ob serving each other. Art dis ciplines and tops to be con sidered as experiences - "Cosmic Objects: Creating Space Monsters Together." Painting the Walls: Making a Mural" 4) Visiting Artist experience - to have a posi tive role model and highly skilled musician to visit, perform, use seven different instruments, explore many I types of music and make music together. Community-based Alterna tives is a program which began in 1975 with the General Assembly's passage of an act providing for various means of involving and working with youth in their own environments but with alternate activities and challenges to stimulate their growth. The local CBA task force chairperson is Jim Flowers from the county schools. The summer project^" director is Merle Creech, Duplin County Arts Council and the two teachers are ? It Is widely accepted by the general public, and the clergy of all denominations as both a moving religious experience, and good musical entertainment. During the 1982 season, GODSPELL was introduced by Duplin out door Drama Society as an alternate show to its popular premier attraction, THE LIBERTY CART, playing only on five Wednesday evenings during the latter part of the season. GODSPELL was an overwhelming success, receiving lengthy standing ovations each evening. It was widely acclaimed by all of the area press, and by the general public, as evidenced by the outstanding attendance the show enjoyed during its entire run.
