Jot Lanier son 4 g School was called off due to extremely hot weather last week, for two days. It was. in my opinion, the right thing to do.. .It must be a sin to make a mistake and call school ^ff and the weather change. During the snow, it was always at the last minute that school was called off. The sun may come out and melt the snow. . .In the summer, when heat t is the problem, here again it is the last minute. . .Lots of people went to bed not knowing if there was to be school the following day or not. . .To me. this seems a little foolish. I believe it is better to call off school and be safe and make a mistake and things get better than to have school and things get worse. . . When you think of country music stars ? Nashville ? The Grand Ole Opry ? you think of big long Cadillacs, rhinestone suits, and a lot of phonies. . .But, this is not always the w ay of things. When I met Charlie Walker, one of the Grand Ole Opry stars, he appeared about as ordinary as anyone. Donna and I were eating breakfast in a small diner in Nashville. We had called Charlie the night before and advised him where we would be eating. The diner was near our motel in downtown Nashville. Right on time, just as he said, he walked in with two small girls, his daughters, one about three years old and the other about seven years old. Charlie was dressed as everyone else, right down to the baseball cap with a sports emblem on it. He could have walked down the streets of Warsaw with his two kids and blended right in. His mode of transportation w as an old GMC pickup truck with a couple of dents on the rear fender. When he left us. he and his two daughters were headed for a farm pond to do some fishing. They had tried their luck the day before and had very little success. Charlie said the two girls were just as happy with a minnow as he would be with a big bass. . .Don't misunderstand. . .Charlie is a successful country singer. His w ife drives the Cadillac. . . He has had 47 songs on the charts during his 25-year career. . .and a million seller in 1958. "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down." Charlie was one of the first country singers to break in las Vegas. Now he is heard bv millions every weekend < n the Opry radio broadcast. . ."Don't Soueeze Mv Sharnjon" was a hit'for Charlie Walker. , .The song was & take-off of an advertisement for toilet tissue. . .Charlie is a very versatile entertainer. His songs range from Texas swing to honky-tonk songs. In fact, he has a lot of honky-tonk songs and he does not even drink, though he performs in a lot of places where liquor is served. He spends about 125 days a year on the road. . .If he is nearby. I suggest you buy a ticket. . . ***** I HAD A PHONE CALL. . .A gentleman called and wanted to know why the Duplin county commissioners did not put in force the "work-fare." This is a federal program in which able-bodied people who receive assistance are required to work. Physically handicapped, mentally handicapped and the elderly are exempt. . .However, anyone able to work would have to work at some civic project to get the food stamps, medical aid or any kind of assistance. . . ***** Bo Herring was telling me about a fellow that was "tight." He was so tight, says Bo. he would wait for the mailman everyday and bum a-cigarette from him. . .The mailman had become so used to the fellow begging a cigarette, he would have his pack out waiting when he got to the fellow's mailbox. . .Son-of-a-Gun. . . . The Ulcer-Cigarette Link Research has established a definite link between smoking and duodenal ul cers. It puts cigarette smok ing right at the top of the list of culprits asso ciated with this disease. It affects the development, severity, healing and recur rence of ulcers Among the facts recently defined: ? Cigarette smokers are about 1.7 times as likely to have duodenal ulcers as nonsmokers; ? Ulcer disease is more common among heavy than among light smokers; ? Ulcers do not heal as rapidly in heavy smokers; and ? Death due to ulcer di sease is about twice as common among smokers.
