Letter To
The Editor
January 23. 1984
J*tter k> the Editor:
? In your January 18th issue,
(here was an article about
action the Board of Trustees
at Duplin General Hospital
had taken in regards to the
Administrator's salary. I
would like to provide some
facts thai might clarify the
action of the Board. Fact 1.)
Duplin General Hospital had
S82.325 more in income than
expenses from operations in
year ending September 30,
1983. Fact 2.) The Adminis
trator had not had a salary
increase since October 1,
1981. Fact 3.) Mileage is not
a part of an employee's
Salary. Fact 4.) Duplin
General Hospital is owned by
Duplin County and this is
why the county is asking for
bids to repair the roof. Fact
S.) A bonus was awarded
based on performance and
Such amount is not con
sidered a part of regular
salary.
The Board of Trustees
approved a proposal from the
Administrator the same
night to reduce the hospital's
overall labor cost by 8.25%.
All department managers
will be required to reduce
their respective labor costs
by this percentage. All hos
pital employees including (he
hospital Administrator and
department managers will be
personally participating in
this cost reduction program.
During the period which this
cost reduction program is in
place, the hospital Adminis
trator will be working no less
hours but will actually re
ceive less compensation than
he has received since
October, 1981.
The salary approved by the
Board is comparable to what
the average Administrator
was being paid in March,
1983 in North and South
Carolina hospitals of 60 to 80
beds. The Board of Trustees
several years ago made a
decision to provide an auto
mobile allowance to the Ad^
minis'ra'or of the hospital
versus the hospital owning a
vehicle and incurring operat
ing expense.
The Board of Trustees felt
tha< a fair and honest deci
sion was made in reviewing
Mr. Harrell's work perfor
mance and in upgrading his
salary. We hope after your
readers have reviewed the
facts, they will feel as we feel
tha' a fair and just decision
was made.
Sincerely,
Ray Sanderson, Chairman
Board of Trust ees
