The St. John's Lodge in Kenans ville was founded only three and one half years after the Grand Lodge of North Carolina, and in 1941 local citizens celebrated St. John's 150th birthday. Along the Way began a series of articles five weeks ago on the history of St. John's Lodge as written by Faison McGowen for the 150th birthday celebration. The original history was read during the cele bration by A.T. Outlaw, then fagister of deeds for Duplin County, and published in THE DUPLIN TIMES newspaper. The following Article will conclude the history as published during 1941 and the conclusion appeared in the July 24. 1941 issue of THE DUPLIN TIMES. History of St. John's Lodge 13 At the Grand Lodge meeting in 1932 our old number 101 was re stored to us. Representatives to the Grand Lodge this year were G.V. Gooding, J.L. Wilhams and F.W. McGowen. , During the year 1931-32. mainly ' lhrough the efforts of our Worshipful Master, Dr. G.V. Gooding and Brother James J. Bowdcn (former register of deeds and tax collector t)l Duplin County), the Lodge repur chased the old Lodge Hall from the heirs of Brother S.O. Middle-ton. w ho hao come into possession of it. The building was renovated and repaired and the lodge entered into a new era of progress. Those contributing to the fund with which to repurchase and renovate the building were as follows: G.K. Aldridge. J.E. Jerritt. W.E. Bclanga. D.F. McGowen, S.L. Ferrell, I.C. Burch. G.V. Godding, J.O. Stokes. F.W. McGowen, A.R Chcslnult. D.S. Williamson. J.B. Wallace, F.J. Baars. J.W. Shaffer. J.L. Williams. J.J. Bowdcn. C.E. Quinn. L.D. Dail and S.B. Hunter. The lower floor of the building was let to the Women's Club to be used for a community building. In 1933 Victory Lodge No. 642. Pink Hill, with the permission of the Grand Lodge consolidated with Warren Lodge No. 101. The fid lowing members were received from Victory Lodge: .I F. .Tvndall. B.B. Holder. O.A. Gardner. W.R. Good ing, F.D. Gooding, W.J. Gradv. R.P. Holt. S.W. Harper. W.G. Kornegay, H.D. Maxwell. Magnus Outlaw. Marvin Simmons. John Ivcy Smith. Albert Smith. G.A. Stroud. M.W. Sutton, J.M. Turner. J.A. Worley and John F. Soulhcrland. At the meeting of the Grand Lodge in 1933 in Ashevillc, ijur old records were restored to us. Representative^ at the Grand Lodge were: G.V: Gooding. J.L. Williams and G.K. Aldrtdgc. In 1935 the Lodge again resumed the practice of serving dinners once a month before the first Thursday night meetings. This has continued and has been deemed beneficial in helping create and hold interest. _ Our annual ladies night and installation of officers is the first Thursday in January. The annual picnic is held the first Thursday afternoon in September each year at Maxwell s Mill. During 19.35 the following mem bers of Warsaw Lodge No. 522 which had become dormant became mem bers of our Lodge: R.D. Johnson. R.F.L. Whelcss. R.C. Sheffield. W.F.. Hines. Dr. J.M. Williams* John M. Pierce. R.W. Blackntorc. A. Brooks. A.L. Humphrev. R.F. Wall. W.K. Taylor. W.A. Blanchard. B.C. Sikes and M.H. Hodges. At the meeting of the Grand Lodge in 1936. our old name and number St. John's Lodge No. 13 was restored to us with all of its rights and privileges. The representatives at the Grand Lodge were: G.V. Good ing. W.R. Gooding. J.M. Brock. A.I. Outlaw. R.D. Johnson. A.J* Blanlnn and F.W. McGowen. A district meeting was held here July 30. I93f>. H.McN. Johnson, district dcpuiv grand master pre siding. In 1937 the lodge sponsored the organizatiori of an Eastern Star Chapter and Kenansville Chapter No. 21S was organized with 25 members. The Chapter is pro gressing steadily having attained honor of being a Gold Star Chapter in the past two years. At the meeting of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina in 1938. our Lodge had the honor ot exemplifying the third degree. The lodge received special commendation from the Grand Master. Past Grand Master. Grand Lodge Officers and others prevent. Broitur Percy C. Scott, Assistant Grand Lecturer, coached a Degree Team which was composed of the following: A.J. Blanton. W.M.; I.C. Burch, S.W.; G.M. Honeycutt. J.W.; J.M. Brock. S.D; R.C. Wells, J.D.: A.Q. Brinson and J.O. Smith, stewards: E.C. Newton, tyler; H.D. Maxwell Jr.. Dempsey Smith. Earl Smith. A.J. Dickson. O.P. Johnson. C.H. Walker. E.A. Newton. L.L. Rogers, P.E. Shoular. Paul Williams. Jaspter Tyndall. W.R. Gooding. J.H. Byrd. Alvin Kornegay. F.W. McGowen gave the lecture. Lh. Ci.V. uuoUutg scrvcvi as a member of the Oxford Orphanage Committee and having been appointed by the Grand Lodge. Our Lodge contributes liberally to the Oxford Orphanage and enter tain, the Singing Class annually. F.W. MeGoucn served as Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan. Canada, in 1138 and in 1931 by appointment of the Grand Lodge. In 1940 Twenty-five Year Con tinuous Service Membership Certi ficates were presented by P.M. J.E. lerrilt to the following R.G. This committee arranged the following program: Sunday, June 22, 1941; 8 p.m. in the Kenansville Baptist Church, Mas-sermon, Rev. C.K. Proctor; Wednesday. June 25. 4:30 p.m., special communication. St. John's Al Lodge No. 13. Sesqui-Centennial Celebartion. 8 p.m. Kenansville School Gymnasium, banquet and speech by North Carolina Governor J. Melville Broughton.
