Pate Selected As Chief Resident At Pitt Memorial Hospital Dr. Carl Pate fc f Dr. Carl D. Pate Jr. (Danny), native of Beulaville, has been se lected as chief resident in family medicine at Pitt County Memorial Hospital and the East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville, where he is a rising third year resident physician in the de partment of family medicine. Chief resident is an honor and ^position bestowed on two third-year Residents in the department of family medicine to assist in and direct the activities of the residents in the department of family practice. The chief residents are selected by their fellow residents and approved by the chairman of the department of family medicine. The department of family medi cine is in charge of the family practice residency program at Pitt .Memorial, which is the largest "residency program at the Greenville hospital. They have 33 resident physicians in their program for the 1984-85 year. The goal of the program at Pitt is to provide postgraduate training in the discipline of family practice for young doctors desiring a career in the specialty of family practice. It is a three-year program providing inten sive training in internal medicine, ?pediatrics, obstetric-gynecology and 1o a lesser degree in surgery and psychiatry. The residents also receive some exposure to specialty areas such as cardiology, ENT and opthalmology and orthopedic problems. Its overall objective is to provide a physician with the training needed to enable him to practice both acute and preventative medicine in the family medicine setting. A special objective of the family medicine residency program at Pitt is to provide training for family physicians who will choose to locate their practice in eastern North Carolina. As chief resident, Dr. Pate will have certain administrative duties within the program in addition to his usual clinical duties as a third year resident in family medicine. Dr. Pate is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Pate, Sr. of Beulaville, and has two sisters, Alice Ann and Nan. He is also the grandson of Mrs. Phoebe Pate of Beulaville and Mrs. Ruby R. Brinkley of Teachey, and the late Ben F. Brinkley Sr. Danny is a 1974 graduate of East Duplin High School, where among many activities, he wv. quarterback of the varsity football team and valedictorian of his graduating class. He received his undergraduate de gree in chemistry from the Uni versity of North Carolina at Chapel ? Hill in 1978, where he was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta, the national premedical honor society. Following this, he attended medi cal school at UNC-CH receiving his M.D. degree in 1982. As a senior medical student he was selected by his classmates to receive the Frank Dameran Award given annually to the student in each graduating class most dedicated to returning to his hometown to practice primary care medicine. Since finishing medical school, he has been a resident in family medicine at Pitt Memorial and the ECU School of Medicine. Dr. Pate is a member of the American Medical Association and the North Carolina Medical Society as well as the American Academy of Family Physicians. After completion of his residency this next year, Dr. Pate plans to return to Beulaville and the Duplin County are^ to establish a private practice of family medicine. Miss Teen Of North Carolina Competitor Karen Cecil Karen Cecil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Cecil of Magnolia, will be competing for the title of Miss Teen of North Carolina in Durham July 5-7 with the possibility of winning an all-expense-paid trip to the Miss Teen of America pageant, a $1,000 cash scholarship, and other awards. Miss Teen of North Carolina is a scholarship program unique in its selection of state and national parti cipants. The pageant utilizes six judging categories to find the most outstanding young women from throughout the country. They are: scholastic record, service and achievement, personal development, general awareness, poise and ap pearance, and judges' interview. Karen is being sponsored by Swift/Hunt-Wesson Foods, Wilkin's Pontiac in Warsaw, Southen Bank & Trust, Joyce's Boutique, Eason's Home Furnishings, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Bray, and I.J. Quinn. Karen is a 9th grade student at E.E. Smith Jr. High where she maintains an A average. She is the reporter for the Beta Club and Student Council, vice president of FHA and a member of the annual staff. A percussionist with the James Kenan High School band, Karen has participated in the All County Band for four years; All State Band for two years, Pembroke Clinic one year, and Stage Band for one year. In 1982, Karen was selected for the Duke Talent Search and has won the Scholarship Award at E.E. Smith for three years, Citizenship Award, one year, and the Duplin County Academic Award in 1984.
