Receives Digital
Telephone Switching System
A new ditital telephone central
^ office switching system wTnch went
P into service Tuesday, July 31, was
cause for celebration by Carolina
Telephone and Telegraph Co.,
Northern Telecom, and the citizens
of Wallace. It is the first digital office
in Duplin County and is the 500th
DMS-100 state-of-the-art digital
switch manufactured by Northern
Telecom at Reasearch Triangle Park.
The equipment was manufactured,
purchased and installed by North
Carolina companies and will be used
? to serve North Carolina customers.
Mayor Earl Whitaker made the
first official call using the town's new
compu ter-con trolled telephone
central office system. The call was
placed to Mayor Frank K. Morbeck
of Wallace, Idaho, during ceremo
nies at the local town hall. Wallace.
Idaho, a town of about 1,800 in
northern Idaho, is celebrating its
centennial.
Officials of the two companies and
a representative of UTS in Kansas
P City, Mo., of which Carolina Tele
?phone is a member, joined commu
? nity leaders in a series of events
celebrating the new system. In re
marks at a dinner for community
? leaders, Wayne Peterson, president
of CT. said, "This investment is an
indication of our company's com
mitment to the communities we
serve in eastern North Carolina and
to the conomic development of the
entire area. Whether the communi
__________
ties are large or small, we want them
to have the best service available."'
Roy Merrills, group vice-president,
added, "Our company and em
ployees are dedicated to producing
quality systems using the latest in
communications technology. We are
proud that we can share with the
Wallace community in celebrating
this milestone in our company."
The new switching system cost
about $2,161,000. This includes the
new digital switch and all modifica
tions and circuit terminations. The
new equipment will make available
custom calling features long desired
by many customers. For additional
monthly rates, customers will be
able to chose from: Call forwarding
which oermits a customer to transfer
incoming calls to another local
number of his choice; Call waiting
which alerts a customer already
using the phone of an incoming call.
The customer can then put the first
caller on hold to catch the second
call; Three-party conference which
lets customers call eight or 30 of
their most frequently dialed
numbers just by dialing a one-digit
or two-digit code for each.
Other benefits of the new digital
office include a 60 percent saving in
floor space required, improved
transmission, reduced maintenance
costs, remote service order and
maintenance capabilities and the
built-in capacity to utilize future
switching technologies.
