Paradise For Animal Lovers By Ruth Wells No, it isn't Ole McDonald's Farm, but a paradise for animal lovers. I'm referring to Charlie Atkinson's col lection of animals and those of his neighbor Engene "Bubbles" Lanier, both of Route 1, Beulaville. Approaching the Atkinson farm, lucious pastures on either said of the road is home to a herd of Brahma and Holstein cattle. Past the comfor table farmhouse and located in a shady oak grove overlooking a farm pond are many animals, some commonplace, some very rare. Sallie, a raccoon, plays on the picnic table while strolling the area are two bobtailed cats. Homing pigeons, hamburg chickens, geese, ducks, goats, fiest dogs and peafowl add to the scene. A Neubin nanny goat has adopted an orphan Holstein calf that is a very well-fed animal. Charlie and his father, Elton Atkinson, also grow hogs on contract with Carroll's of Warsaw. The other animals are a hobbie of Charlie's and this hobby qualifies him as an equestrian. His horses range from a majestic quarterhorse to a full-grown midget horse, "Little Man." Little Man, as his name implies, stands a proud 32 inches tall and he is 10 years old. A close friend and neighbor, Eugene "Bubbles" Lanier, also has a more or less menagerie. Bubbles is a turkey grower along with his father, V.L. Lanier. But his real love is his pets. Entering his animal residence, you may be greeted by Bojangles, a black and tan hound, along with a Walker hound, a bulldog and a Brittany Spaniel. He also raises Neubin milk goats and has a 3'/i-month-old Brahma heifer "Trista." Trista's coat of red hair looks like the very richest, most luxurious velvet you ever saw. But the animal who calls (brays) to you across the yard, making each visitor feel welcome* or at least acknowledged, is Jack, an 8-year-old burro who surely feels he is king of the barnyard. Charlie and Bubbles love animals and will be displaying several of these unusual creatures at the Duplin Agribusiness Fair in Lenansville October 1 through 6. Trista, a red Brahma calf owned by Bubbles Lanier, is one of the many animals he raises as a hobby. This animal, like many of his, is raised on goat milk. James Kenan Hosts Clinton In 1984 Football Opener WARSAW - Coack Billy Byrd and his mighty Tigers of James Kenan High take on the powerful Dark Horses of Clinton this Friday night at Tiger Field. Qinton opened the season last week with a 21-21 tie with Southern Wayne of Mount Olive. The Dark Horses' senior running back Lennie Faison rushed for over a hundred yards to keep Clinton tied with the Saints. WALLACE - Quarterback Kevin Williams threw for two touchdowns to spark the power-laden Wallace Rose Hill Bulldogs to a 36-0 shutout over West Columbus in their opener last week. North Duplin took a 21-0 lead into the dressing room at half and Gomes EAST CENTRAL CONFERENCE GAMES Sept. 7 Richlands at East Duplin Hobbton at Erwin Clinton at James Kenan East Bladen at Lakewood Midway at Littlefield North Duplin at Aycock South Lenoir at North Lenoir Tar Heel at Union Wallace - Rose Hill - Open RESULTS October 31st Swansboro 22 - East Duplin 14 Wallace-RH 36 - West Columbus 0 Clinton 21 - Southern Wayne 21 Hobbton 14 - Wake Forest 7 Littlefield 6 - Lakewood 3 Pender 29 - Midway 14 North Duplin 28 - S. Quarterback Lee Pate tossed two touchdowns and Don Pate rambled in for two more to lead the Rebels in their season opener. East Duplin fell short in their opening game with Swansboro 22-14. Steve Lanier tossed a 30-yard TD to Kirk Thigpen and Melvin Dixon scored from the four to lead the Panther attack. This week East Duplin and South Lenoir take on their old rivals and the games shoultj rate very high for fans in the area. While North Duplin travels to Aycock in another archrival battle, James Kenan will have to contain one of the best offensive machines in the state if they expect to win.
