Nursing Home Residents Honor Minister The Rev. Harvey Blanton of Rose Hill was honored Sept. 2 at Guardian Care. Mrs. Ruby Riggs, resident, i presented him a plaque for eight j years of outstanding volunteer ser- I vice. i Rev. Blanton came to Guardian j Care in September of 1976 to hold I Sunday morning worship service and has been a faithful volunteer since i that time. ] Rev. Blanton, a retired carpenter, and his wife of 48 years, Thelma, are i members of Island Creek Baptist Church. He is also a member of the Brotherhood at Island Creek and a member of the county Ministerial | Association. He works part-time as i I chaplain at Duplin General Hospital and holds morning devotions on a local radio station part-time. Before coming to Guardian Care, he served as part-time chaplain at the prison For one year. In the past Rev. Blanton received a certificate and volunteer corp service pin from the residents in May, 1983. Rev. Blanton stated, "1 hope to give many more years of service to our "Always be ready to speak your mind and a base man will avoid you." William Blake Lord." The residents say "Thank you. Rev. Blanton." I 1 Electronics Engineer Joins JSTC Faculty Robert Nelms, electronics engi neer, will be the newest faculty memember in James Sprunt Techni cal College's electronic engineering technician curriculum when the fall quarter begins Sept. 27. Nelms bring an impressive back ground of electronics training and experience to his position at James Sprunt. After a 20-year Air Force career, during which he worked primarily in the electronics field, he was employed with California indus tries for 12 years as an electronics engineer. He holds a B.S. in elec tronic engineering from the Uni versity of Illinois and has done additional graduate work in elec tronics. In 1974, Nelms took his experience to the classroom at Trident Technical College in Charleston, SC. He has taught electronics at the community college level since that time in both the South Carolina and North Caro lina systems. Nelms says he is excited about teaching at JSTC. "1 am hoping that the combination of my teaching experience from several places and the time 1 have spent in industry will enable me to provide a practical as well as theoretical perspective to mv teaching in the program." James Sprunt's electronic engi neering program is one of two high lech curriculums at the college. Business computer programming is the second. The two-year program prepares its graduates for careers in electronics research and design, development, production, mainte nance or sales. As the use of computers in business and industry continues to rise, persons with electronics backgrounds and exper tise are in great demand. "Most recent statistics show that electronic technicians who can per form computer maintenance are now in even greater demand than com puter programmers," says Perrv Whaley, also an instructor in the program. The electronics program is rela tively new at JSTC, having operated for three years. Nelms views it as "small but going. I am impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of everyone I've met here so far and am looking forward for the fall quarter to begin." Registration for the electronics program and all other JSTC pro grams is Sept. 26.
