Health Tips From
Plain View Health Services
Influenza [Fin]
Influenza (flu) is an acute, highly
contagious disease which is self
limiting (meaning a patient will
recover even if no treatment is used).
It is caused by a virus or direct
contact. The onset is sudden with
chills or chilly feeling, generalized
backache, headache and leg aches.
Nausea and vomiting are present on
occasion. There is fever from 100 to
105. Sore throat and a dry irritating
cough often occur.
Vaccines for immunization against
flu caused by certain strains of virus
are available. The vaccine is usually
started about the first of September.
It is important in older people,
people who provide essential com
munity services, those who may be
at increased risk of exposure such as
schools, social services and medical
care personnel, and people who are
suffering from some chronic disease
such as heart disease. Thev do not
'fS
take effect for five to seven days and
the protection lasts only six to nine
months.
Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection of the
lungs that may be caused by a great
number or organisms. Many differ
ent bacteria can cause pneumonia.
One attack does not give immunity
and pneumonia is not contagious
(not passed directly from one person
to another.)
Pneumonia should be suspected
when fever persists more than four
or five days in a bronchitis. A sudden
onset of cough, and elevation of
temperature in the course of another
disease should make one suspect
pneumonia.
Immunization against pneumonia
is recommended for persons over
two years of age as follows: 1)
persons who have splenic dysfunc
uon due to sicle cell disease, 2
persons with chronic illnesses such
as diabetes mellitus, and functional
impairment of cardiorespiratory sys
tem, 3) persons SO years of age or
oder, 4) patients about to undergo
immunosuppressive therapy.
Vaccine for pneumonia should not be
repeated for at least five years. The
vaccine is usually started about the
first of October.
In the face of a severe epidemic, it
may be wise to obtain the protection
afforded by these vaccines.
Plain View Health Services offers
annual immunization against flu and
pneumonia. The cost is $10 for flu
vaccine and $10 for pneumonia
vaccines. No appointment is neces
sary. _
