The Archery and Hunter Safety
Shooting tournament for Duplin
County Schools was held on Wed
nesday, Oct. 3 at 3:30 p.m. at
Kenansville's Turkey Stadium.
Students were to test their marks
manship in bow and trap shooting as
a county fair exhibition. Participants
have been taught safe gun and bow
handling, game laws, safety rules
and sporting ethics, and have passed
the N.C. Hunter Safety examination.
This safety course is taught in
ninth-grade physical education
classes.
N.C. Wildlife Hunter Safety
Officer Wilton Pate and local wildlife
officers were on hand to enforce
safety rules and correct tournament
procedures.
These students are serious sports
men. Many of them will compete in
the state tournament in April and
could possibly win ah invitation to
national competition. You are invited
to support your school team and see
a fine exhibition of shooting skill
Wednesday afternoon.

There will be a Co-Rec Volley
ballTournament Saturday and
Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14 at Thompson
Gym at the Warsaw Recreation
Department.
The Tournament will benefit Ron
ald MiDonald House and is spon
sored by the Kenansville Jaycettes.
AH Co-Rec teams are invited to
enter. Ten first and second place
trophies will be awarded to the top
two teams. Entry fee is $55 for the
round-robin tournament. Should the
tournament be changed to a double
elimination, the entry fee will be
lowered. The games will run all day
Saturday and after lunch on Sunday.

ECC Game Of The Week
Beulaville: Coach Billy Byrd's
fighting Tigers slopped in the rain
and mud last Friday night and came
off the field with a 34-7 conference
win over East Duplin. James Kenan
now stands 2-0 in the league and 3-1.
overall, while East Duplin has a 1-2
conference mark and 1-4 overall.
The Tigers, blessed with talented
backs, were just too much for the
Panthers. Linwood Carlton scored
twice, Bennie Melvin scored and so
did Mark Ellenberg. Mickey Fai&on
rushed for 195 yards and added a ID
to the Tiger cause.
James Kenan will entertain front
runner Midway in the big ECC game
this week at Tiger Field. Coach Byrd
and his staff invite all Tiger fans to
come out and support the football
team.
The Wildcats of Hobbton, led by
Kelvin Bell and his 143-yard effort
shut out arch-rival Lakewood last
Friday night 20-0 in another East
Central test.
North Duplin's quarterback Lee
Pate led the Rebels' attack last
Friday night 36-19 over South Lenoir
in another important ECC game.
ECC power Wallace-Rose Hill shut
down the Patriots of Pender 20-0
behind the running of Johnny John
son and Kelvin Alderman. Pender

top contenders, also losing to James
