Lenoir To Observe National Lunch Week
The Lenoir County schools will be
joining others across the nation in
celebrating National School Lunch
Week, Oct. 14-20. This special ob
servance marks the 22nd year of the
American School Food Service Asso
ciation's emphasis on the national
school lunch program in the public
schools.
"Many things have changed in the
past 22 years, and our school lunch
programs have changed, too," ex
plained Mrs. Marva Brown, child
nutrition director. "Many schools
now have multiple choice menus as
?well as food service programs fea
turing salad bars, soup bars, sand
wich bars, potato bars, a-la-carte
lines and self-serve lines."
Students now have input into the
program, sIk also noted, for many
students are involved in YAC pro
grams ? Youth Advisory Council
groups ? that work with food service
personnel. Various nutrition educa
tion programs are also offered in the
classrooms.
This year's theme. "Chamnion? rrf
Nutrition," is the third year of a
year emphasis on "School Lunch:
America's No. 1 Energy Source."
The theme focuses on the idea that
true champions are well-rounded in
all areas of life with athletic ability,
an appreciation of the arts, scholastic
ability, a blue-ribbon winning atti
tude and tender loving care. The
National School Lunch Menu
features food to "fuel a growing
body" with items named to reflect
the emphasis on becoming true
champions: Marathon spaghetti, an
Honor roll, Maestro tossed salad,
Blue Ribbon fruit, Honey-Oatmeal
Raisin cookies and TLC milk.
