Monday, Oct. 22, will be Rufus
Edmisten Appreciation Day in
Duplin County. A fund-raising
reception will be held at The Country
Squire from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Congressman Charlie Whitley will
be on hand to introduce Edmisten.
Tom Gilmore, who was a Democratic
candidate for Governor and who is
now chairman of the Democratic
Unity Campaign, will attend the
reception. Also invited are Lt.
Governor Jimmy Green, Insurance
Commissioner John Ingram and
former Commerce Secretary Lauch
Faircloth of Clinton.
A public reception will be held at
the new Kenansville Elementary
School on Highway 50 East of
Kenansville from 7:30-9 p.m. Re
freshments will be served and enter
tainment will be provided by the
Mount Olive College Singers and
The Sounds of Music.

Retired Superior Court Judge Lacy
Thornburg, Democratic candidate
for attorney general, will visit Duplin
County on friday, Oct. 19.
The Thornburg campaign
schedule will be as follows: 7 a.m.,
Bland's grill, Warsaw; 8 a.m.. Rose
Hill Restaurant; 9:30 a.m., WTRQ
Radio Station. 11 a.m.. Wagon
Wheel, Beulavilie; 12 noon, Shrin
ers' Fish Fry, Kenansville Municipal
Park, and 2 p.m., Piggly Wigglv in
Wallace.
Low Income
Energy
Program
The low income energy program to
help with heating bills of low income
households will begin Oct. 15.
Applications will be taken and
processed at the cheese distribution
warehouse near the dog pound on
Highway 11, south of Kenansville.
Social Services staff will be available
to take applications from Oct. 15
through Nov. 30 at the warehouse.
This is not a first-come, first
served program. Anyone applying
who meets the eligibility require
ments will receive a payment.
There will be no issuance of food
items from the warehouse Oct. 15 -
Nov. 2. New households wishing to
apply for food should not come
during that time.
Persons wishing to see Mrs. Betty
Broadhead. Social Security represen
tative on Tuesdays will not need to
wait in line with the energy appli
cants.
Income of recipients of food
stamps, AFDC, Medicaid and SSI
will be used and other applicants will
need to verify the total family income
for the month of October. 1984.

Beverly Simpson, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. William F. Simpson of Pink
Hill, recently graduated from the
Art Institute of Atlanta.
At the institute, Beverly was an
honor graduate and served as an
instructor in the Saturday teen
program. She wili remain in Atlanta
as the advertising coordinator at
Fortel Incorporated, a video elec
tronics manufacturer.
