SON OF A GUN by Joe Lanier ^ ,.v,v. ttiwi ;viu wau uu u 11 in yuu gei out ana won lowara tome thing. Kenansville's Town Board and Recreation Commission decided to ask the Board of Education for the land called "Turkey Stadium," which is a tract of about 2l/i acres of land just north of the Kenan Gym. It was once a pari of the old Kenansville school property. . .The school board has a record of giving abandoned school property to the town in which it lies to be used for t Tecreation. . .So, the folks in Kenansville wished to make improvements to the ball tieia uy adding a press dox and, maybe, lighting it, and so on. They | figured perhaps they should get title to the land as other folks were also . jtalking of things to be put on the property. However, while they were seeking title, School Superintendent L.S. Guy told of a plan to build a ball field at the jaiew Kenansville Elementary School and asked if perhaps these folks would Hike to help. It would be a joint venture with both the school system and the Bffown of Kenansville putting funds into the ball park to make it a super place. BBoth the school system and the town would use the park. It appeared the Single sighted goal at that time was a deed to Turkey Stadium. Now that the {jftown has inat deed (and they deserve it as much as any other town that has ? asked for and received abandoned school property). Now that the town has | that deed in hand, perhaps they will reassess their plans and take a real good 1 look at the superintendent's idea. It is an idea that I think to be a good one. At I Turkey Stadium the mosquitoes (which are being preserved by the state I environmentalists) are blood-suckers from the Twilight Zone. They fly in and | threaten to beat you up if you don't stand still until they get their fill of your 4 blood. And, their number is uncountable. . .Another dilemma at the Turkey M Park is a place to park your auto. Considering both places, Turkey Park and "Kenansville Elementary School need ball field improvements. The school f property is high and dry; the insects are few to non-existant; parking is a , dream with lots of paved parking.. .So, it would seem Turkey Stadium should be-preserved as a reserve field and the improvements put at the school. It would be a top-notch park for the school and for the recreation commission. . .fWial would be better than choosing one site to improve would be to improve j both, if the funds are available and the need is there ????? ? It's time to pal the commissioners on the back again. This is tw * in 1985, hut they deserve it, for they voted to spend some of our tax money to help the s??ond largest group of people in Duplin County ? the voters. . .The largest ^ group of people in Duplin County is the non-voters. . .How much of your V money did they spend?. . .Well, around $80,000, which is not a great deal if ytm look at it individually. . .1 don't remember the exact figures, but seems | like one penny of the tax rate brines about $70,000. . .So if your tax bill is $250, it cost you 25 cents. Not looking at cost, but at value received, you wiH know who was elected within an hour or so on election night ? after the poles close. Remembering dates such as birthdays, anniversaries, has always presented a problem to me. This week I had it all figured out. My 29th wedding anniversary was the 23rd ? Wednesday. I was so proud of myself. . .1 had remembered. . .1 was going to be quiet about it so everyone would lltink I had forgotten. Then on Wednesday I was going to come on strong with fea pretty card with loving sayings, a dinner out, and a small personal gift. . .1 was determined not to gel busy on something and forget. . .1 was all brig hi-eyed and proud. No one had reminded me. I knew what I was doing. . .S>\ you know what happened Monday morning? Donna got up and said, "Happy Anniversary." . . .Son-of-a-Gun, the date was the 21st and not the 23rd. . .Wow. That was a let-down. Let's see. My dad, J.D., and my son Jimmy's birthday is February 23rd ? or is it my daughter Gv.-en's. . .No hers U the 27th. . .Let's see. I can always get it straight if I start from George Washington's birthday, which is February 22. . .Or did they change that? No See his like they changed it for a few years but now it is back on the right date. . .Or does that start next year. . .Wait, let's start all over and ask Donna. . .Son-of-a-Gun.... ^Cla?sifed Ads FOR SALE 2-acra lot with wall and aaptlc tank locatad approx. 2 mi. outsida Pink Hill.
