^ NADA Livestock Awards Recently the Neuse Area Development Association meeting was held in Kinston. "One of the functions of NADA is to provide recognition to producers who are doing a superb job in management of their farms and livestock operations," says Keith J. Hairr, assistant agricultural extension agent. Of the nine-county area covered by NADA, Don Loomis of Potters Hill was the top feeder pig producer and Cecil Kornegay of the Mount Olive area came in second in beef production. P As Donald Bowman of Wells Livestock in Wallace presented the award, he pointed out that Don attended NCSU and was on the All American swimming team. "Don Loomis now works with his brother-in-law, Stacy Quinn," said Hairr. Last year they sold their old herd in an effort to rid their operation of pseudorabies. As the houses were emptied, they removed the old flooring in the farrowing house and nursery and replaced it with wmm* ? mmmmmmwmmmmimmmm5 mrnmmFMW-': woven wire. They restocked with an .excellent cross of large white and Landrace gilts. Since they have been back into production they have yet to wean less than nine Dies/sow from the farrowing house. Cecil Kornegay won his award due to excellent management of his purebred polled Hereford herd. He uses AI breeding in order to give his customers a choice of bloodlines. For the past two years he has had a 100% or better calf crop due to his management and to two cows which consistently have twins. Cecil is also on the extension service's beef herd improvement program which assists producers in selecting superior breeding stock.
