Workshop On Elsmere Curriculum Approximately 16 teachers and related personnel attended a work shop April 18-19 which dealt with the Elsmere Curriculum with trainable mentally handicapped students. The workshop was conducted by Ann Isley, trainer. The Elsmere Curriculum is a vocational oriented program which was developed for the trainable mentally handicapped students ages five through adult. The philosophy is based on the premise that all TMH students should be provided oppor tunities to develop skills and com petencies which will enable them to become productive adults for suc cessful community living. The curriculum is organized in developmental sequences. There are five major life skill areas taught and they are: academics, socialization, independent living, provocation and vocational training, and personal family life. A diagnostic process has been developed for the Elsmere program. Each student is evaluated in the areas of vocationally related aca demics, social skills, self-help or independent living skills and mani pulative-vocational skills. The data gathered is used to determine strengths and weaknesses and the present level of educational per formance. Each student is then placed in the curriculum. The Elsmere curriculum is structured so as to incorporate the drill approach, demonstration, exercising, reinforcing and explora tory approaches to instruction. In each instance, instruction begins with a skill the student has mas tered, teaching from the known to the unknown, from the simple to the complex, and from the concrete to the abstract. Finally, the most important aspect is on-the-job training after they have mastered the appropriate skills and parent involvement.
