East Duplin FFA Installs New Officers
The East Duplin chapter of the Future Farmers of America installed the
1985-86 officers during the April 24 club banquet. Pictured above, left to

Liberty
Festival
Due to lack of interest and
participation, there will not be a 1985
Liberty Festival. The town and local
community citizens failed to give
their support to the annual event.
A special meeting was announced
for last week at the Pink Hill Town
Hall urging persons to come if they
seriously wanted a festival. Persons
attendine were Wilbur Tyndall,
president; Lynda Stroud, secretary;
W.A. Avery, treasurer; and Harold
and Violet Stroud.
There will still be a Miss Liberty
Pageant since the pageant is a
separate entity. Scholarships will be
offered to the winning contestants
this year. The date has been set for
Friday night, June 28.
Students Win Governor's School Award
Major recognition has come to
Lenoir County school students with
the announcement that eight young
men and women will attend N.C.
Governor's School during the
summer of 1985. Supt. Young H.
Allen said, "We are tremendously
pleased and proud of this record
breaking number of students who
i will represent us at Governor's
School/'

Students are selected on the basis
of achievement, general ability and
performance. They must qualify as
academically sifted and demonstrate
performance if chosen in art, music
or drama. The six-week summer
sessions are held at St. Andrews at
Laurinburg and Salem College at
Winston-Salem from June 23 to
August 3. Three students are

Nancy Catherine Johnson, a junior
at South Lenoir High School, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Johnson of Pink Hill. She will be
attending Governor's School West in
mathematics. Her future plans in
clude attending Northwood Institute
in Midland, Michigan to major in
business administration.
Rufus Antonia Flowers, a sopho
more at South Lenoir High School, is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Flowers of Route 1, Deep Run. He
will attend Governor's School East in
mathematics. He is a semifinalist for
the N.C. School of Science and
Mathematics.
Michele Louise Hurst, a
sophomore at South Lenoir High
School, is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Ernest Hurst of Route 1, Pink
Hill.

Angle Medico of the South Lenoir
FFA, placed first in the Lenoir-Jones
Federation FFA Creed Speaking
Contest. She will advance to compete
in the District II Rally, to be held at
Lenoir Community College May 9th.

pageant still needs contestants. If
you're 16-19 and still in high school
(high school seniors are eligible), the
pageant may be for you, according to
reigning Miss Liberty Tina Long.
There will be competition in
modeling evening gowns, interview,
talent, personality, impromptu
questions and photogenic.

Grubbs
Is New
Areu Pastor
The Rev. Frank Grubbs has
assumed the new position of pastor
for Christian Chapel Free Will
Baptist Church, Route 1, Pink Hill.
Grubbs was graduated from South
Lenoir High School in 1971. He
received his associate in science
degree from Mount Olive Junior
College in 1974 and received his
B.A. degree from Atlantic Christian
College in 1976. He as ordained as
an Original Free Will Baptist
minister by the Cape Fear Con
ference in 1974.
Grubbs is presently serving as
president of the Third District
Sunday School Convention. He
currently holds the position of
director of literature for the N.C.
State Sunday School Convention of
Original FWB.
Grubbs is married to the former
Diane McQueen, a native of Duplin
County. She grew up in the Beula
ville area and grauuated from East
Duplin High School. Currently she is
a pre-nursing student at James
Sprunt Technical College.
The Grubbs have two children,
Celena, 15, and Jason, 9.
PRAYER BREAKFAST
The monthly prayer breakfast will
be held Saturday morning, May 4 at
8 a.m. at the Family Restaurant.

which occurred on April 16. Un
known persons or persons did break
and enter the N.C. Coins and Pawn
Shop located at 901 W. Vernon
Avenue. Perpetrator or perpetrators
did steal, take and carry away 14
handeuns having a value of $2,245.
BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT
Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Hartsfield
of Route 1, Deep Run, announce the
birth of a son, Bradley Scott, on April
12, 1985 at Lenoir Memorial Hos
pital.
The maternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Franklin L. Tyndall of
Route 2, Deep Run. The paternal
grandparents are Robert L. Harts
filed and Ethel Cole of Brunswick,
Ga. Mrs. Hartsfield is the former
Amy Tyndall.
Entry was gained by breaking the
glass out of the front door.

Hours have been changed on
Mondays to 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.,
starting Monday, May 6.

Bloodmobile At JSTC
The American Red Cross Blood
mobile will be at James Sprunt
Technical College on Wednesday.
May 8. seeking donations of much
needed blood from Kenansville-area
citizens. Donors may contribute at
any time between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
in the student lounge in the
McGowen Building.
This is the third year JSTC has
sponsored a blood drive for the
Tidewater Region of the Red Cross.
This year's goal is a donation of 85
units of blood. Last year's drive
collected 70 units.
You are asked to take time on May
8 to come to JSTC and "give the gift
of life."
