Commissioner D.J. Fusseil Duplin County will discontinue its mosquito control program at the end of this fiscal year. The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously last week to end the program because of its cost. The county put up $47,795 of the $84,795 cost of the program for the present fiscal year. The state pro vided $37,000. "Mosquitoes are as bad now as when we started it several years ago," said Commissioner D.J. Fusseil. He said state and federal govern ments put up most of the money when the program began, but now the county has to finance most of the program. Workers involved with the pro gram will be transferred to other county jobs, the board agreed. No one will be fired because of the program's demise. In other business, (he board en dorsed the efforts of Britthaven Nursing Home Co. of Hubert to build 50 nursing home beds in the county, it also has endorsed Duplin General Hospital's application to establish 20 nursing home beds. Britthaven plans to build in Wallace. Commissioner W.J. Costin voted against endorsing a specific com pany. He wanted to have the state choose the company it thought would do the best job. Chairman Calvin C. Turner ab stained. Commissioners Allen Nethercutt, Fusseil and Dovie Penney voted for the endorsement. Frank Moore, tax supervisor, said assessed valuation of Woltescrape, Albertson, Smith and Rockfish townships increased $7 million from last year, a 6.94 percent increase. The board agreed to write the legislature to support a move to have personal property taxes collected on private vehicles at the time owners purchase their annual licenses in stead of having the vehicle tax included in annual county tax bills. The proposal would have the Divi sion of Motor Vehicles return the tax to the counties involved. Moore said property taxes on many vehicles are not paid under the present system. No one appeared before the board as it sat as the Board of Equalization and Review, a body that hears appeals on county tax assessments. It next will sit as the Board of Equalization and Review at 9:15 a.m. May 20. Due to a change in crediting, Moore, who is also county veterans' service officer, said Veterans Ad ministration expenditures totaled $2,298,424 in Duplin County during the past fiscal year, compared with $4 million in the preceding year. He f said the money is the same, just that the payments are credited to the mailing zip codes instead of the counties of residence. He noted Wolfescrape and Albertson townships have Wayne County zip codes and Smith Township residents have Lenoir County zip codes. Richard Harrell, hospital adminis trator, said the county ambulance service billed $6,150.74 more in ambulance fees between October and April than Medicare will pay. it *L received $817.91 in ambulance fees during the period. The commissioners also learned that Dr. Ronald Dietrick will begin a practice as a general surgeon June 1 in Duplin County. He has practiced in Korea for the past 20 years under the auspices of the Presbyterian church.
