Rotary's Shadow Program
Gives JSTC Students
View Of Working World
Three students at James 5prunt
Technical College are praticipating
in a new program sponsored by the
Warsaw-Kenansville Rotary Club to
give the students "field experience"
in the careers for which they are
preparing.
Called the "Shadow Program,"
the prefect pairs a student with a
specific career interest with a person
employed in that field. For part of a
working day, the student accom
panies, or shadows, that person as
he or she goes about the routines of
th~ nort'ng day.
"This pairing cf student and
professional provides the student a
realistic and first-hand view of some
of the requirements and responsi
bilities of the career he or she is
preparing for," said Ralph Cottle,
coordinator of the program for the
Rotary Club.
The Rotarians have sponsored the
"Shadow Program" for students in
the county high schools before, but
this is the first time the program has
been implemented at JSTC. Three
students, representing three
different career programs, are
participating in the program this
quarter.
Beverly Cole, majoring in protec
tive services/criminal justice, spent
part of a day with Dennis Albertson,
county probation officer, learning
about the probation and parole
officer's responsibilities, case loads
and typical duties.
Mary Gardner, accounting major,
spent a day with Bob Brumleve,
comptroller for Quinn Company, a
large grocery wholesaler with a
fully computerized accounting and
distribution system.
Boyd Davis, majoring in electrical
installation and maintenance, is
scheduled to work with the county's
electrical inspection department as
his "s..adow" experience.
Students and instructors alike are
finding the program to be a very
beneficial experience, according to
Jess Outlaw, director of vocational/
technical programs. "The students
who have participated so far have
found the experience very meaning
ful," he said. "Thev onlv wish thev
could spend more time in it. We
appreciate the sponsorship by the
Rotary Club, and certainly hope the
program can continue," he added.
"There is no road or ready way to
virtue." Thomas Browne
