Powers-Bailey Nuptials
Saturday, May 25, at two o'clock
in the afternoon, Miss Patricia Anne
Bailey and Walter Richard Powers
? changed wedding vows in a double
ig ceremony at the St. Charles
Avenue Presbyterian Church in New
Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Richard
Wells officiated.
Miss Bailey is the daughter of
Mrs. Jean Weber of Covington,
Louisiana, and Thomas W. Bailey of
New Orleans, Louisiana. Mr. Powers
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Richard Powers ofBeulaville.
Pre-nuptial music was presented
hv Mrs. Elizabeth Schwarz, organist,
? New Orleans, and John C. Pickul,
soloist of Houston, Texas.
Silk flower arrangements in
shades of peach and white, accented
with ivy and lilies-of-the-valley en
hanced the altar and also the
reserved pews.
Escorted to the altar by her father,
the bride chose a formal white gown
of silk taffeta and alencon lace. The
fitted lace bodice featured a sweet
heart neckline with an overlay of
?lint d'esprit illusion. The pointed
ctorian style lace collar, sleeves
and bodice were reembroidered with
seed pearls. Covered buttons down
the back of the gown emphasized the
alencon lace panel which extended to
the hem of the chapel train and a
matching lace border accented the
hem of the gown. A fingertip silk
tulle veil completed the ensemble
and the bride carried a bouquet of
silk flowers in shades of peach and
?ite, featuring roses and lilies-of
-valley.
Miss Karen Bailey of New Or
leans, sister of the bride, was maid
of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss
Patti Powers of Greensboro, sister of
the groom; Mrs. Gayle Porter of
Dallas, Texas; Mrs. Carolyn Craig of
Fremont, California; and Miss Pam
Starkes of Houston, Texas. The
attendants wore floor-length gowns
of peach chiffon over taffeta featur
ing off-the-shoulder ruffled neck
^es. The natural waistlines were
sashed with matching cummerbunds
over softly gathered skirts. They
carried bouquets of mixed spring silk
flowers in shades of peach and
white.
The groom chose his father,
Charles R. Powers of Beulaville, as
his best man. Groomsmen were
Randy Smith of Deep Run, Joel
Alligood of Atlanta, Georgia: Bill
Bailey of Houston, Texas, brother of
the bride; and Walter Raymond
David of Beulaville, grandfather of
the groom. Both the groom and
groomsmen were attired in tradi
tional black tuxedos. The groom's
boutonniere was lilies-of-the-valley
and the groomsmen wore miniature
pale peach silk roses.
The mother of the bride, Mrs.
Jean Weber, wore a sky-blue geor
gette formal gown featuring a boat
neckline, elbow-length butterfly
sleeves, and a self-sashed natural
waistline.
The mother of the groom wore a
gray formal gown of georgette over
taffeta featuring a jewel neckline and
long fitted sheer sleeves. Both
mothers wore silk corsages
that matched the bride's bouquet.
John C. Pickul sang "The Lord's
Prayei ' after the couple had been
pronounced man and wife. As the
couple proceeded to leave the
church, the bride presented a white
silk rose to her mother and one to the
groom's mother.
Mrs. Sharon Butzman, who di
rected the wedding, also directed the
presentation of white helium-filled
balloons to the outgoing wedding
guests. The guests then awaited the
bride and groom outside the church.
As a local jazz band played, the bride
and groom emerged from the
church. At the bride's signal, all the
guests released their balloons and
the sky above the church was filled
with upwaj"d-bound shimmering
white balloons.
Nearby a chartered trolley car
awaited the newlyweds and their
guests. It was decorated with white
balloons and signs congratulating
the bride and groom. The jazz band,
numerous wedding guests, relatives,
wedding party members and the
newlywed couple boarded the trolley
car for the ride to the wedding
reception at 1427 Carrollton Avenue.
Once there, the couple and their
guests enjoyed champagne, tradi
tional wedding cake, a chocolate
groom's cake decorated with a duck,
and a sumptuous buffet consisting of
such local delicacies as muffalata
and spiced crawfish legs, assorted
meats, fresh vegetables and fruit
with dip, cheeses, and other varied
finger foods.
After a wedding trip to Honolula,
Hawaii, the couple will return to San
Francisco, California, where they
will attend the Pilot Life Insurance
national convention. Upon returning
to North Carolina, they will make
their home in Jamestown.
