Graduate Of South Lenoir Wins Scholarship Kevin Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Durwood Anderson of Pink Hill, is the recepient of the Hyatt Scholarship for $1,500 for each of his four years of college. Among the criteria for the schol arship are leadership, academic excellence, truthfulness, and devo tion. He represented South Lenoir as a boys' state participate, was a mem ber of the honor society, and was chosen as a member of Who's Who Among American High School stu dents. He was a member of the ;nonogram. math and FT A clubs. He participated in football, basketball, and baseball all four years of high school. He was co-captain in basket ball and captain in baseball. In baseball, he made All-Conference. At the school athletic banquet, Anderson won the 1984-85 senior male academic award. He will be attending East Carolina University this fall. The Jackson Family Kevin Anderson Announce Birth Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Herring of Rt. 2 Mt. Olive announce the birth of their son, Christopher Brandon, born July 23 at Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville. He weighed 9 pounds and 7 ounces. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Murphy of Apex. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Cotton Herring of Rt. 2, Mt. Olive. Maternal great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Elbert G. Smith of Pink Hill. Paternal great grand parents are Mrs. Inez L. Moore of Kinston and the Late Isaac Moore. Duplin All Stars Represent The State In World Series On Sat. Aug. 3, the Duplin County All Stars faced the defending World Series Champions, Mississippi. Mis sissippi took an early 4-0 lead in the second inning and coasted to an easy 12-2 win. This loss put North Carolina into the losers bracket to face Georgia who was defeated in their opening game by Louisiana 10 to 9 in 13 innings. The game between North Carolina and Georgia was a close one throughout the entire contest. Georgia broke on top with five runs in the top of the second inning. North Carolina countered with four runs in their half of the third inning. The game remained close until North Carolina come to bat in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Tar Heel State Champions trailed 6-4 going into the 7th inning. The locals scored one run and had the tying run on third and the winning run on second as the game ended on a strike out on a 3-2 pitch. The disappointing loss to Georgia ended North Carolina's Cinderella bid fi - the 1985 Dixie Boys World Series. Crime Of The Week On Tuesday, July 30, 1985, bet ween 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., a black male entered Kinston Junior High School located on Park Avenue and assaulted Jean Mallard, an em ployee of Kinston Junior High School, by striking her on the head with a steel pipe. Lenoir County Crime Stoppers, Inc. will pay up to SI,OCX) for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the prepetrator of the crime. Anyone having information on this crime or any other crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 523-4444 weekdays from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Callers need not give their names; all callers remain anonymous. Deavers Observe Fiftieth Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Deaver of Rt. 2,Deep Run, pictured above, observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary Sunday with a re ception being held at Gray Branch Church Fellowship Hall. The event was hosted by their children and families: Mr. and Mrs. Herman Deaver and child ren, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Deaver and children, Mr. Eu gene Deaver and children and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Gene Tyndall and children all of Deep Run. Angie Tyndall poured the punch whilbsl)ana Deaver served the cake. Both Miss Tyndall and Miss Deaver are granddaughters of the couple. The register was attended by Denee Deaver. Goodbyes were said by Michelle Tyndall and Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Tyndall all grandchildren of the couple. An array of gifts was receiv ed. THANK YOU The Duplin County Dixie Boys All Stars wish to thank each and everyone who helped make pos sible their trip to the 1985 World Series in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Our Duplin County Boys, who are the North Carolina State Champions, re presented North Carolina and Duplin County with respect and dignity. The generous support of the communities made this a memorable occasion and the first for boys of Duplin County.
