s Along The Way _____ By Emily Killette t Some of the best stories published in the old DUPLIN TIMES are the ones written in poetry. Throughout the old volumes of the TIMES are numerous poems and many were written by local people about their times. There are also many poems published in the old TIMES which are not credited to anyone. This week Along the Way reprints two poems found in the 1936 volume of THE DUPLIN TIMES. Ma And The Anto May 7,1936 Before we take an auto ride Pa to Ma, "My dear, Now just remember I don't need suggestions from the rear. If you will just sit still back there and hold in check your fright, I'll take you where you want to go and get you back all right. Remember that my hearing's good and also I'm not blind. And I can drive this car without suggestions from behind." Ma promises that she'll keep still, then off we gladly start But soon she notices ahead a peddler ' and his cart. "You'd better toot your horn," says - she, "to let him know we're near; He might turn out," and Pa replies; ; "Just shriek at him, my dear." ? And then he adds; "Some day some ? guy will make a lot of dough . By putting horns on tonneau seats , for women-folks to blow." Little farther on Ma cries, "He " signaled for a turn;" ; And Pa says; "Did he?" in a tone ? that's hot enough to burn. . "Oh, there's a boy on roller skates," ; cries Ma, "Now do go slow, "I'm sure he doesn't see our car." ? And Pa says "I dunno." ? "I think I don't need glasses yet, but really it may be . That I am blind and cannot see . what's right in front of me." If Pa should speed the car a bit, some rigs to hurry past Ma whispers; "Do be careful now. You're driving much too fast." And all the time she's pointing out the dangers of the street And keeps him posted on the roads where trolly cars he'll meet. Last night when we got safely home, -Pa sighed and said; "My dear, ? -I'm sure we've all enjoyed the drive .you gave us from the rear." Kenansville In 1936 April 23,1936 Years ago our village was in dark ; ? nesst, y Now electric lights are seen; And we trust in the near future More improvements will intervene We have now the water system Which has come to us of late; This we find a great convenience That we appreciate. There's no better school in Duplin Than the one located here. And no better supervisor Than Mr. Johnson found anywhere. Still the same old Spring is flawing And paved highway road a charm We can note continued traffic To the cities from the farm. The Atlantic Grey-Hound bus is passing And its first claim is 'safety' Though, perchance on never knows. The last store building we've time to mention Which is kept by Henry West; When we speak et clever merchants He is one among the best. Here we see five filling stations So near together most on a line; Goes to prove they are successful The owners all seem doing fine. We have now a Dr. Gooding Who is termed one of the best; If you doubt what we are saying You just put him to the test. And our pastor, Mr. Goodman Who is so worthy of the name; And if our Boy Scouts miss good training We are sure he's not to blame Now our Juniors Club proposes To adorn the courthouse square; ?/ With flowers, shrubs and evergreens Then to keep with proper care. Slowly but surely, our village is im proving General appearance plainly shows; And we hope they will continue To build more pretty bungaloc?.
