SON OF A GUN by Joe Lanier Next Tuesday, Nov. 5th is Vote Day for Duplin's towns. They will elect new or re-elect the present town board" members and mayors. The selection in some areas is good, but in others there is no selection. Not enough people cared aboift their town to give voters a choice ? or they are well satisfied with those in office or those that filed. . .With no one in mind in this municipal election ? but just a thought ? it is a shame that some voters have to look-over the selection and pick the Jeast-worst one. . .Not the best, but the one with fewer bad qualities. . .This is not evident in too many of Duplin's towns, bu t in the election coming up in May of next year, there will be a lot of that. . .The best thing about the upcoming election is the voting machines. . We should hear who is elected in the towns within an hour or so after the poles close. . .In the May primary, we should also hear who is elected or nominated for the November election within an hour or two. . .We won't have to wait all night. . .And for both elections, there are some real good people willing to nut their names in to help their areas. . .Politics is not bad; just some of those involved. . .And perhaps "bad" should be explained a little furthet. Usually "bad" means when things do not go the way you want them to. Bad does not mean dishonest. Duplin is fortunate. It has no really dishonest politicians. . .So, let's get out and vote this election and see that it stays that way. . .The more folks that vote, the better represented we all will be... On weekday mornings I have a radio program on local news on WTRQ; thus I am unable to go places or participate in things earlv in the morning. . But, on Saturdays I get up early and go different places and eat breakfast. Seems the breakfast crowd gets more into things of the day. They have just read the newspaper or heard the early news and talk about this and that, and I, of course, like to listen. . .But, sometimes what you hear is not really the way it sounds. . .This past week I was at the Smoke House in Beulaville, and this lady said, "I feel better this Saturday than I did last Saturday. . .1 am not drunk.". . .She went on to say she had to work at the church that Saturday morning. . .Now, it is not as it sounds, for it sounds like she staved sober this Saturday morning so she would not embarass herself at the church. . .But, her so-called drunkenness was from her ailment. Her blood-pressure was a little too high, causing some dizziness. . .1 didn't notice if she was eating a country ham biscuit, but I sure was. . .1 really like the Smoke House's customers' coffee-pouring project. . .Every new customer that comes in in the morning takes the coffee pot and refills everyone's cup in the restaurant. .. .Son-of-a-Gun.... Fight Problems I The Duplin County Board of Education approved a plan last week to coordinate the schools' health curriculum with several service agencies in the county in an effort to combat health problems facing chil dren. School Superintendent L.S. Guy outlined the plan to improve the schools' role in dealing with child abuse, respiratory problems, after school child care and other health related matters. The plan would set up a coordi nated effort among the school sys tem, the Duplin County health, social services, and mental health departments, the Goshen Medical Center and Vocational Rehabilita tion. Guy said representatives of those agencies are willing to meet with school officials and allow students needing help to be referred to them and to provide information that goes beyond what is already covered in the school system's own curriculum. The school system teaches state approved health and living courses ? in grades kindergarten through 12. "Teachers are not trained to the same degree as specialists are," Guy said in requesting the coordinated program. Also, the board voted to change its regular meeting time from 8 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. beginning with its next meetine Nov. 5.
