JSTC Scholarship Recipients Several students at James Sprunt Technical College have recently been awarded academic scholarships through the College and James Sprunt Foundation. (Photo by Nelson Best) First-Year Students Awarded Scholarships At JSTC Three first-year students at James Sprunt Technical College have re ceived academic scholarships awarded through JSTC and the " ? m m m James Sprunt Foundation. Joan Holmes received the Dixon S. Hall Scholarship, a $500 two-year award given annually to an entering student who is majoring in one of the business technology programs. Ms. Holmes is an accounting major and resides in Albertson. Emily Sholar is the first recipient of the Dallas Herring Scholarship. This award was established this year by the N.C. Community College Alumni Association in honor of Dr. Dallas Herring of Rose Hill. The scholarship to be awarded annually pays tuition for one academic year. Ms. Sholar, from Wallace, is a business administration major. Angela Griffin is the first recipient of the John Cameron and Ruby Spence Smith Scholarship, a $250 endowed award to be given annualy to a first-year student from the East Duplin district who plans to pursue a baccalaureate degree after gradua tion at James Sprunt. Ms. Griffin, a resident of Pink Hill, is a general education-college transfer major. All recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievent by the scholarship committee. Awarded by the scholarship com mittee. the scholarships provide $300 for the academic year to each recipient. They apply to the scholar ship committee and are selected on a competitive basis. This year's recipients are: Mary Gardner, accounting major, Beula ville; Cathy Ray nor, business com puter programming major, Wallace; Carolyn Thigpen, business computer programming major, Albertson; David Salzler, business administra tion major, Wallace; Barbara Atkin son, medical assisting major, Warsaw; and Joyce Terry, associate degree nursing major, Beulaville. Also receiving special tuition scholarships for $180 are Joanna Hanchey and Pamela House. Ms. House was awarded a scholarship for graduating aa the aalutatorlan 01 ner ? claas at North Duplin High School. A resident of Mount Olive, she is in the associate degree nursing program. ? Ms. Hanchey was awarded a scholarship for serving as editor-in chief of the student newspaper, "The Spirits." A resident of Wallace, she is a second-year stu dent in the general education-college transfer program. Both of these scholarships are provided through the James Sprunt Foundation. Masonry Helper Program At JSTC James Sprunt Technical College is accepting applications for a new masonry helper - brick tender train ing program offered under the aus pices of the Job Training Partner ship Act (JTPA) through the JSTC building trades programs. The six month training program will run from January through June and will provide training in site preparation, mortar mixing, brick sawing, masonry cleaning, proper use of tools and other skills to qualify participants as helpers. The program will also provide services of job location and placement and the development of employment skills. Fees for tuition, books and tools will be provided for students who meet requirements. Persons interested in enrolling should contact the Human Resources Development office at JSTC before Dec. 20 by calling 296-1341, extension #252. AARP Meets Dec. 19 The Duplin County AARP group will meet Thursday, Dec. 19 at the Senior Citizens Building in Kenans ville. Mrs. Betty Broadbent, a repre sentative of social security and medicare, will be the speaker. Mrs. Broadbent is well informed on the subject. Make your reservations by Dec. 17 at the Center.
