I wish the papers that publish ser ciety news would git knocked out frum passin' through the mails. They give me more trouble than awl other things put tergether. I hev got az gude a little 22 5 young wife az eny man in the State if I could keep her frum readin' Srbout serciety. That iz her weekness. She got hold ov one ov them papers that bed a hole lot erbout a big recepshun an' "at homes," pink teas an' uker parties the other nite. She read fer a long time without saying a wurd an' I knowed whut wuz comin jist az much az if L hed seed it. Direckly she sed : "Zekie, dear, do you still think, serciety iz a dangerous thing ter fool with?" "Ov course hit iz," sez I. "Hit brakes up more families an' starts more divorse suits than awl other evils combined. Jist look at the leg islates Why, they air wurkin' nite an' day ter stop meanness and can't do hit. One day they jump on the licker question an' mash the stuffin' out ov hit an' th next day they air 'ivyjn' ter. i-fd'jre the divorse evil fifty per cent, an' still the people won't awl hits hair out tryin' ter make peeple stop their evil way. I reckon they could do more gude by settin' a few gude examples, but they can't erford ter make the sackrfise." Bety sed: "What hez that got ter do with serciety? I like ter git a new hat, a percale dress an' a pair ov them shoes with heels four inches high . and go ter the pink teas an' uker parties. I could see what the other ladies wear an' talk over the fashions fer next year an' I don't see how that would hurt me or you either." "Maybe it wouldn't," sez I, "but I don't want you ter take eny changes. Sum ov the wimin' air like sum ov the men, they air one thing in pub lick an' another at a pink tea. I haint never bin at one ov them teas, but if they haint begun it they may begin ter take a little sumpthin' fer the nerves. Lots ov wimin hev form ed the Peruna habit. Hit may cum ter this after awhile: One lady will say: 'What wuz hit that the Guver- nor ov North Carolina sed ter the Guvernor ov South Carolina?' 'Oh! horrors, don't start eny thing like that." another will say. "No harm ter take a little Wattsine.," another win say. men tney win pass eround the bottle. One will say: 'I never take Wattsine; hit don't suit my compleckshun.' Another will say: . i i ' i i f . f awiways iook uesc in orown. oum others will take scuppernog wine an' sum will want dark colored wine, an' others will want corn whiskey be cause hit 'iz so helthy.' Then the divorse court mill will soon be run nln' day an' nite an' the legislater will hev ter stay in session awl the time tryin' ter make peeple gude. I'd rather you wouldn't go inter so ciety, not till you reach the age ov ninety." I could see that Betsy wuz mad, but she didn't say enything. When she gits real mad she iz speechless, an' I know hit iz a gude time ter keep quiet, too. She kept on readin' the papers. After awhile she thought she'd ax me a question that I couldn't anser an' git even with me. She lowed: "Here iz a man that sines hiz name J. Hilton Johnson: Why does he do that?" "lie didn't fix hiz name that way himself. When a man goes ter the insane asylum fer a few years an' leeves partly cured, the keeper ov the asylum tells them ter part their names in the middle that way so folks will know that they hev bin ter the asylum an' that they will bear watchin'." I read a little peece in a paper the other day that sed a husband an' wife orter talk over matters an' tell one another their faults. I'll bet a mule that the feller that writ that hain't never bin married. I tole Betsy erbout hit an' suggested that we ex periment a little. She pitched in an' tole me awl my faults. I didn't mind hit fer I had herd hit awl er bout a millyun times. But when I begun ter tell her erbout her faults, the sparks begun ter fly an' I never had sich a time in my life tryin' ter keep her frum gittin' a divorse. I actually hed ter git down on my knees. Yours truly, ZEKE BILKINS. New Year Thoughts. Time is but a stream. I go a fish ing or I drink at it, but while I drink I see the sandy bottom, and detect how shallow it is. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains. I would drink deeper, fish, in the sky, whose bottom is pretty with stars. II. D. Thoreau. The years, how they have passed! Until Sahara has been heard from it will be impossible to tell exactly how far south that cold wave on the other side of the Atlantic actually went. New York Tribune. LOCAL MATTERS. Am effort is being made to get an appropriation from Congress to have an elevator put in the post-office in this city. Congressman Chas. It. Thomas, a member of the Public Building Committee, stated that he would do all he could to get an appro priation for that purpose. A meeting of North Carolina Pri vate Schools and Academies were held in the House of Representatives December 2Sth. Col. Robert Bing ham, of Asheville," principal of the Bingham School, is president, and Prof. J. A. Bivins, Superintendent of the City Schools of Monroe, is secre tary. A fine session was held, which will result in much good to the cans? of education in this State, One of the boldest hold-ups that evr occurred in the South took place on Seaboard train No. 81 near Rich mond, Va., December 3 1st. The Pull man conductor was shot in the arm by two unknown men, who robbed the passengers of $800. Engineer Mike Tighe, of this city, was at the throttle. The conductor who was shot win named C. A! Eberhart, of Jersey City, N. J. The robbers escaped. Mr. Thos. A. Partin will lease the store occupied by William S. Nowlan Crockery Company, Fayetteville St., and will open a dry goods store there ;-'Vut the 15th of February, 190 7. He will carry a large stock, Mr. Partin is an experienced dry good.-? man, having recently been with the A. B. Stronach Company, and form erly with the Messrs. W. H. & It. S. Tucker Company. The Enterprise wishes the new firm great succes. At the Turner school-house in Panther Branch Township, Decem ber 21st, there was an entertain ment. County Superintendent Z. V. Judd made an address, and some member of the Woman's Betterment Association from Raleigh presented a Webster's Unabridged Dictionary as the second prize for the greatest im provement in school-house and grounds during last year. The firs, prize was won by Fuquay Springs schools, and the other second prize by the Wilbon school. Mrs. W. A. Gattis suffered a stroke of paralysig on Saturday, December 22nd, about 2 p. m. at the home of her son, Mr. Chas. II. Gattis, and died Thursday, December 27th, at 6.30 o'clock. Mrs. Gattis would have been, sixty-two years of age next March. Her maiden name was Olive V. Hankins, of Richmond, Va. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was one of the founders of St. Luke's Circle, which haa charge to the St. Luke's Home in thi3 city. She was interred in Oakwood Cemetery. On Christmas morning, at an earl hour, a S. A. L. train ran into a ca boose, which had gotten loose from a siding, and killed a brakeman who was asleep at the time. The name of the unfortunate man was Wm. J, Weatherspoon, of Sumpter, S. C, also slightly bruising Mr. J. R. L. Beane and Mr. J. E. Parks, who were in the telescoped coaches, which occurred just beyond Pigeon House Branch, in a cut east of the Raleigh and Pam lico Railroad station. A watchman, Lum Upchurch, was found asleep at the switch, from which the caboose escaped at the main line. Capt. John Duckett, who has been Statistical Clerk in the office of Sup erintendent of Public Instruction, on January 1st became State Superin tendent of Colored Normal School;, still, however, 'etaining his old posi tion. Mr. Chas. L. Coon, formerly Superintendent of the State Normal Schools, becomes Statistical and Gen eral Clerk in the office of Superinten dent of Public Instruction. Miss Ella Duckett, stenographer for the Super intendent of Public Instruction, has resigned to assume more important duties. Miss Hattie Arrington will fill Miss Duckett's vacant place. The negroes of this city celebrated Emancipation Day, January 1st, in Metropolitan Hall. A large crowd filled the hall and addresses were de livered and good advice was given to the large assemblage. The main -point in the address was the scathing criticism of President Roosevelt's ac tion in discharging, without honor, the throe companies of negro troops from the service of the United States Army because of the "shoot up" at Brownsville, Texas. The speaker claimed that the troops should have had a trial, and that the innocent should not have been made to suffer with the guilty. Confederate Soldier Dead. Mr. Elbery Lewis, a Confederate soldier and inmate of the Soldiers' Homo, died Dece mber 23rd, and the remains were sent to Nash County on the 10.30 train, where the interment took place. The deceased was eighty-six years of age, and had been an inmate of the Home since last February- For several months past he had been grad ually declining and the end was not unexpected. He was a member ol Company A., 47th North Carolina Regiment. Mr. Lewis was a native of Springhope, Nash County. Positively the richest read- ins of the year . will be, "Around the World on a Mule," by Zeke Bilkins. Subscribe for the' Raleigh Enterprise to-day and he in time for the first let- ter, which will appear January 10th. A Happy New Year. When we wish each other a Happy New Year there is much more in it than appears on the surface, and it might be well for us to add to the wish that our friends try hard to make the year as full of happiness as it is possible to be. But in how many instances do we hear the mere wish and nothing more, we let the year take care of itself, not caring much whether we put into it any thing that will come back upon us in a shower of blessing, as the rain which ascends to the skies in vapor comes back upon the earth in the form of rain. The first prayer of the soul in darktfess is, "Lord, give me light." The answer only fully comes when the Spirit teaches that soul the true Christmas prayer, "Lord, make me a light-giver."
