Thursday, August 1, 1907. THE TCALETfiTT "RKTERPRISE. Anti-Railroad Mania. (From the New York Tribune.) North Carolina seems to be afflict ed with an anti-railroad mania. It went about passing its fare law with just as much unseemly passion as it now shows in enforcing it. The leg islative discussion of fares prpvoked such violent outbursts that the mod erate and cool-headed Charlotte Ob server denounced the Legislature as a "menace." In the hearing before the Railroad Committee President Finley, of the Southern Railway, was treated so discourteously as to create almost a State scandal and to alien ate for a time public support from the radical fare reducers. There was no examination into the financial ef fects of a reduced fare. The commit tee asked figures from the railroads bearing on this question and gave the railroads four days to furnish them! The railroads explained that it would take months to complete the informa tion. Before the bill was passed Gov ernor Glenn, who is an old attorney for the Southtern Railway, was a conservative and was counseling moderation. He advised that the rate be made 2 cents. The whole agita tion is said by a writer in the Rich mond (Va.) Timas-Dispatch to be pure politics. Every demagogue is endeavoring to outbid every other demagogue for the support of the rabble. Perhaps Governor Glenn in his present course is trying to atone for his conservatism of last winter. His record as a railroad lawyer and advocate of moderation would seem to need burnishing up, considering the present temper of North Carolina Fighting the Federal Courts gives him his chance to outdo the other demagogues.
