VOL XXI NO. 32, 'FRIDAY DECEMBER, 17, 1915. Ex-president Roosevelt has refer red to President Wilson as a "by zantine logothete". Of course, you know what he means. A penny spent for a red ; cross stamp is a penny toward stamping put consumption.. You can get the stamps at the Postoffice - or Missil dine's Pharmacy. Clerk - Burgess of the Board of County Commissioners has given The News copy of the annual report of the board and if will be published in, next weeks issue. The money sent away to mail order houses and money . - spent it neighboring cities is impoverish Ing Polk County to that extern. Polk County merchants are alive, they are putting out bargains to in duce you to trade at home. Read their ads, meet them half way and spend your money at home. You will encourage local merchants tc carry better lines and larger assort ments by trading at home. The dol lar you send away is gone never tc return. . , ABOLISH POSTMASTERS William H Taft is advocating the abolisment of postmasters, in the large city offices. The former presi dent contends they are inefficient and uneconomic.. The saving would be $4,000,000 annually. He says tin deputy postmasters named undei civil service should be made post masters and the business operated as any big; business is conducted thus ending the awful waste of mon ey and taking the postoffic,e out oi politics. Postmasters in offices o. the first class are ornamental, serve no useful purpose and are no longer a political asset after their appoint" merit. - If four, millions of dollars can be saved annually and an actual betterment of the service be made at the same time, why, in the name of common sense, isn't it dene? Our people are a tolerant set but surely we will wake up to the situation soon and stop public, as well as private graft. In private life a grafter is despicable. 1 , BIG PECAN ORCHARD The first fruits of the 100 acre pe can orchaifd planted by Frank V Scott, of Elizabeth City, are being ex hibited by the proud owner. One of the 2,000 trees bore nuts for the firs) time this fall. Seventy other irees bloomed this summer and will bear nuts next fall. By the year 1920 Mr Scott believes his orchard will be yielding handsome returns. Frank Scott's orchard is the larg est in the state. It was planned five years ago and he has, had such won derful success with his young trees that nurserymen and horticulturists all over the United States have beer interested in his experiment. The pecans are of the paper shell variety and. are easily marketable at fancy prices. .The orchard is in NIxonton Township, about four and a half miles from Elizabeth City.
