What Kind Fruit Are You
P&ducing This Year
AH indicatjijons for 1924 point
toward a bountiful fruit crop
throughout North Carolina.
Added to the production of
sound fruit, the output will be
greatly increased by much
knotty, scabby, and wormy
material. In seeking high
grade produce, local dealers
are forced each year to handle
quantities of fruit from out
side the State? since quality
holds first place. There is no
shadow of doubt but what the
North Carolina apple or peach
equals that produced in any
other section, providing it is
cared for properly- A basket
of sound fruit is worth many
of culls. The fruit grower
should by careful and thorough
spraying make the most of the
plentiful crop which nature
has supplied this year.
Orchard Program For June.
Sow the peach orchard to
cowpeas between the middle
and latter part of June. N Soy
beans will be found satisfac
tory for the apple orchard.
These crops afford an efficient
means for adding fertility to
the soil.
About one month before the
peach ripens apply spray to
protect the fruit. Self -boiled
lime-sulphur will be found ef
fective with one pound of
arsenate of lead added to each
50 gallons of spray. Bearing
apple orchards should be
sprayed according to spray
schedule, using Bordeaux mix
ture spray material with one
pound of arsenate of lead ad
ded to each 50 gallons of spray
Green Manuring Crops
In Orchard
Some green manuring crop
should be sown in both the ap
ple and peach orchard during
the latter part of June. Soy
beans and cowpeas make the
best manuring crops for the
orchard. They add nitrogen
and increase the humus con
tent of soil when returned to
it. Most . of the soils of the
state are deficient in both. It
is best to sow these summer
crops about 3 12 feet apart in
order that cultivation may be
continued through the dry hot
summer months.
Hay should never be grown
in the orchard as it competes
too strongly with the tree
water at the tiihe the1 tree
needs it most, thereby neither
the hay no the orchard will do
as welll as they should.
