MUSIC FESTIVAL POPULAR WITH TRYON MUSIC LOVERS WHO ATTENDED CONCERTS Rosa Ponseil anil Mario Chamlee Charm Audience With Their Versatility and Ability. The Spartanburg papers w?re full of the Annual Spring Music Festi- J val ? had been full of it for weeks in I advance each successive issue lead f ing up to the grand climax, which was heralded as "Artist's Night." The Polk County News too, had been telling her readers about it, trying to prepare them for something way i out of the ordinary. All Spartan, burg then, and Tryou, as well as the other towns and cities within a wide radius were agog with antici pation as Friday night drew nigh; but none were altogether prepared for such an outburst of harmony, of striking personalities of gracious- 1 ness. as the artists themselves dif fused, like glorious sunshine, over the thousands who had gathered in j Converse College Auditorium to lis ten to the treat in store. The big stage was perfect setting with tier after tier filled with hap- j py young girlhood, living up to all J the traditions of beauty for which j the South is justly famous. Color- ; ful. they were in dainty pastel slu.des, the light airy effect of chif- ? fons and organdies adding charm to | the girlish "bobs" and piquant faces, j In asking the male member of our p:.ity how the men of the chorus I. might be described, the reply was that a group of men in full evening . dress always reminded him of a flock of crows ? There were many handsome faces, many splendid voices in this flock! The orchestra, and the heavenly ' strains pouring forth under the dL rectlon of master minds of music, I was a thing to marvel at, to drink in, and enjoy-_but not to describe. Chamlee stepped before the foot lights. Chamlee, the incomparable who has won the rights of the fa mous to carry but one name. His j whole nature seemed to thrill and respond to the appreciation of a vast audience, anj he answered call after call with unassumed good na ture and unselfishness beautiful to see. His is a voice that moves to deepest emotion, and sweeps his lis- ) teners completely. Rosa Ponselle was a vision of rare ' loveliness in hoop skirts and bodice of rich silk and lace, with diamonds glittering on throat and corsage, with her spontaneous, irresistable smile, and her face, even sweeter than the red rose she carried. With an angel in her heart, a bird in her throat, and the devil in her eye, Ponselle stormed the auditorium, and was ' imposed upon, cruelly imposed upon in view of the fact that she had al most decided to cancel her engage ment on account of illness. Num. IS MARIO CHAMLEE or after number she pave, throwing erself into the spirit of song with o.rvor ;:n?l delight. Lind and Patti of yesteryear are memories but few can cherish? Ponselle is with us. girlish, fresh. charming ? beautiful and wonderful. Her goldefc voice ? it is best to stop here. The accompanist was superb. The Chorus, magnificont in its rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner'' and Dixie". The Traffic Policemen who han died the crowd were courteous and helpful to visitors^ and the mass of cars melted miraculously after the concert on account of this attentive, ness. Spartanburg is a fine town to vis it. One Is Welcomed with a smile and bidden Godspeed at leavetaking. ' O BACCALAUREATE SERMON Rev. (\ P. Burnett will preach the Baccalaureate sermon to the graduat_ ing class of the Tryon High School. Sunday evening at S:00 p. m. at the Tryon School Auditorium.
